The underside of the hood is a matte black. Not a flat black, but not mirror glossy either. If you are doing a concours restoration, I'll let the other guys on here comment as to the exact paint mix and over spray patterns, etc.

Our RA Hood underside appears to be some sort of Gloss Black. Definitely not flat Black. 80% confidence it is original paint.
I would have guessed Satin Black. |

Underside is a lower gloss black not sure of the % but not flat not gloss. There was significant body colored overspray on mine and spots where the hooks used on the line covered the overspray. I have a picture of Henley's Orbit orange Judge from the nationals which are quite close to how mine looks if you need it. Mark

the amount of overspray varied a lot, some cars (Baltimore especially) seem to have overspray allover the place while others (Fremont in particular) seemed to have penny pichers in the paint department.
Some things never change, I bought a 2010 Bimmer last summer and you can see the overspray on the front shock towers is very heavy on one side of the car but non existant on the other.

Original paint on underside, 69 lemans HO. Looks like it was hung from the back of the hood. Baltimore plant. 02-C

the amount of overspray varies hugely from car to car but also from plant to plant. Generally I have noticed that Baltimore cars had lots of overspray and at the other end the Fremont plant seemed to be cheap on paint.

Will you lose points if you paint it without the overspray?

depends on the show - won't loose any points but wont be considered for best of "anything" because other cars will have it "correct" - depends what you are after.

I wouldnt take points off for not having it, but thats me, other judges may. I think if the rest of the car was perfect, not having it would probably keep you from best of show.

I have deducted for not having overspray under the hood and will continue to do so. Factory never taped anything.

Interesting that it appears the hood was hung from the back. I was surprised to see that.
That looks upside-down to me, as all the truck plants I worked in they were hung from the front of the hood. I think it was so that, after the hood came out of the paint shop, the assembler in the front end sheet metal trim area could install the latch, mechanism and secondary spring without having to bend over. Plus - it would seem more important to me to get good paint coverage over the leading edge of the hood, rather than the trailing edge. Just an observation - K

I would tend to agree with that, original paint cars i've owned had runs that would indicate the hood was suspended from the back, with drips on the leading edge of the hood.
