Is This Brake Part Required?
I'm re-assembling the front disk brakes on a '65 GTO and have two metal retainers originally held in place by the large bolt on top of the backing plate that attaches it to the spindle. There is a notch on the retainer that looks like it aligns with a raised part on the wheel cylinder.
What purpose does this part serve? Mine are pretty chewed up and I can't find the part in any store or catalog, and there is no reference to it in the shop manual. Can I just use a washer instead? I attached a picture of where it appears the part should go. Thanks in advance for your help. David |

Oops, not disk brakes, DRUM brakes, but you probably figured that out from the picture.

Wouldn't be that hard to repop with CNC laser cutting. I wonder if the Chevelles use the same bit?

and of course wel all have a cnc lazer cutter sittin around not bein used for any other purpose

I don't, but it is not hard to draw something up on AutoCad and have it cut.... not that I know anything about that.

It would be a piece of cake to make a drawing and have it laser cut. But the problem will be the minimum charge. Most steel houses will have a min charge (around $250 or so) per order. So you could get 2 cut for $250 or get 50 of them for $250.

It would take you longer to draw that and have it made, than to make it with hand tools.
Maybe someone can see if it is listed in the factory parts manual and get some sort of name.

I also posted in the 64'-'65 forum and found a member there who might have a couple. I suppose I could find some scrap metal and use a hacksaw, drill, file and dremel tool, but I'll wait and see if this works out first.
We decided it's an anti-rotation, locking tab for the spindle bolt. Once the bolt is installed (oiled and torqued to 80-110 lb-ft), the corner is bent up against the bolt head. Laser or H2O-Jet should not run more than $125.00 - $150.00 lot charge including the metal.
