Default Experiences installing SGF70 Crossflow Pypes system

I just got a big box of PYPES! The SGF70.
My car currently has NO exhaust system left. I ripped out rusted mufflers and the dual exhaust that was on it.
I have the motor, trans and the 28150 headers on it.

I'll have to check my hangers and see what's left. Any tips on this install?

Vidguy, I just put that system on my '71 Formula, and I'm impressed with the fit and the instructions. Much better than the Flowmaster system I put on my '75 Formula several years ago. I used the rubber muffler hangers included with the system and bolted them to the stock hangers. The tail pipes are designed to fit into the stock tailpipe hangers too! Buy a metal cutting wheel for a chop saw if you have one and the cuts are done quickly! I have stock manifolds so the front installation for you will be different with headers. Thanks, Rick

Vid Guy, start from the rear and work forward as best you can. That way you can get the tailpipes centered/fit properly like they should be. It is much easier that way too.

Rick, glad you offered your first hand comments too. One thing you did not mention was the sound level but I suspect the new one was a bit more drive-able and bit less resonance prone.

hey Tom, I have an SGF70 system still in the box for after my '72 Formula is painted, so I'll have better feedback later this year. Pat's Lucy Blue '72 T/A install was in the pics of the thread I posted and as always, he did an awesome job. I really liked his tip on the bunge cord to help with the mounting of the pipes

Vidguy,

We both have 1975 Formulas and I just ordered this system for my car since the brake lines and brake line bracket on my car interfere with the inlet pipes on the Flowmaster crossflow. In a road-racing application, I need the additional suspension and ground clearance that this system offers, so I am very eager to learn of your opinions on how the system clears everything, especially the rear leaf springs!!!!

Keep in mind that I always use two short 'flex couplers' right after the headers to reduce the torsional stress on the headers. These are cheap and readily available from either Summit or Jeg's...Robert

Hi Tom:

I have not driven the '71 with the Pypes system yet; I just started it up and ran it briefly for the first time since a complete restoration of the car. It sounds similar in decibels to the Flowmaster system on my '75, and the tone on the Pypes muffler does seem less resonant from the short time I heard it. The Pypes system did set off the car alarm on my daughter's car parked behind it, so it still has an agressive overall sound. thanks, Rick

Robert, the pieces on the Pypes system that go over the leaf springs and into the muffler are WAY better than the Flowmaster system. They fit perfectly contoured to the shape of the car body underside where the rear axle is and have just enough clearance to not rub on the body underside (behind the rear seatback) and the brackets attached to the frame and the rear stabilizer drop links. You will be VERY impressed after having the Flowmaster system.

"Robert, the pieces on the Pypes system that go over the leaf springs"

Oops, I meant the pieces that go over the rear axle, not the leaf springs...

Cool,

Thanks for that information. The only issue I had with the Flowmaster was suspension interference when I switched to rear disc brakes. The Flowmaster Crossflow never gave me any problems with resonance AFTER I adjusted the hangers and installed new, OEM mounts. I did not bolt the system to the rear floor like Flowmaster suggests, which I am sure contributes to rigidity and vibration, that many interpret as acoustical resonance.

I have no doubt that I will be happy with the Pype's system, if it offers the clearances you describe. Sound to me is totally meaningless and not a selection criterion, no more than I would buy a camshaft for the sound it makes at idle.

I just really don't want to cook any more rear brake lines...Robert
