color sand
My 2 cents worth, no.
Hand sand it with a sanding block or sanding pad, 1200 grit wet/dry and clean water. Then finish up with 2000 grit, then maybe 2500 but most guys stop at 2000. Ron |

Do not use a DA. If it is that bad wet sand and repaint Paul |

you can easily use a da with 1500 wet/dry paper as long as you stay away from creases/edges
saves alot of elbow work low speed sanding flat and you cant go wrong |

My car was had the final sanding and buffing done with a DA.
I thought it looked perfect before it was sanded but my painter is a perfectionist and sanded and buffed it..now it looks even better. If you know what you are doing then its no problem using a DA |

Hey RedDirtRoad (cant help thinking of the Brookes and Dunne song with the same title), your poncho looks sweet! Silver done right looks great! Anyway, yes it is common for a finish to be sanded with a DA. 3M Trizact is an abrasive made just for that use, and is designed to be used with water. However, to remove all of the dreaded "urethane wave" I prefer to wet sand with a block, starting with 600grit, on up to 2500grit,to obtain a perfectly flat surface. Done right there wont be a touch of peel or aformentioned "wave".

Yea, thats where i got the user name from.. line in the song... "her daddy didn't like me..in my shackled up GTO"
thanks for the compliments on my project. My painter is the head painter for a high end, new car dealership. He also blocked my car as well. i am extremely happy with the results I checked your site out too. Looks like your shop does impressive work. how do you like using the low voc water borne paints? I was going to use water borne sikkens but ended up using solvent instead. |

I have seen people successfully dry sand with a da.I bought all the pads etc,to do it,really did not like it.If you pick up a piece of dirt if your hand sanding, you will feel it.With a da you wont.Face it wet sanding sucks, and takes forever!

3M makes a DA paper for dry sanding with a DA and it works. I had never tried it because it is very expensive. I guess about 3 pieces of 3000 grit will do a whole car.

You can absolutely use a machine for color sanding. Go with the Airvantage.

Hey Glassgo
I noticed a pic on your website of a blue SD 455. Is it a 1974 4-speed car with black interior? Did it come from San Diego? I'm wondering if its the one I painted 18 years ago. Only 212 of those made.................

I use the 3mg dry sanding paper as well, only on small motorcycle jobs. The stuff is expensive, wears out VERY fast, and I can tell you that 3 pieces will NEVER do a complete car. Now 3 boxes? Maybe............. l
