Default New (to me) 400 build

I finally got around to degreasing and taking apart the motor that came with my 67 Firebird. I did some searching and it looks like what I have originally came in either an automatic equipped 71 Firebird or GTO. The heads decode to 96cc with 2.11, 1.77 valves and have the screw in rocker studs.

The block #'s are:
Front of block: C007761 YS
Rear of Block: 481988
Rear, by distributor: G070 --- there's also a 6 and a 71 nearby: date code, did I decode this correctly? July, 7, 1971? Or is it 1970?

The heads, according to the markings on the exhaust ports show:
B 96 5 ------date code G090
96 5 ------date code F260 I could not make out the first figure

Basically, I'm just looking for confirmation that I have a good platform and plan. I'm planning on doing the forged stroker kit from Butler. I'm thinking that this should work well to raise the compression in combination to the 96cc heads. The car is going to be mostly street driven with occasional track use. I'm shooting for the 500h.p, 600 ft.lb range. Any suggestions for me? Any other info about this motor?

Thanks

Anyone?

Also, the crank has an 'N' on it; does that mean anything?

Thanks

The N is for Nodular....the designation for the strengthening the cast crank

Yea, good platform to build a stroker. Any of the Pontiac engine builders on this site can set you up to achieve your goals. Not too difficult with a 400 stroker. A little work on the heads and the right cam and you are there. Attention to detail in building the short block will pay big dividends, which again goes back to having a knowledgable 'Pontiac' shop do the work.

That's kind of what I thought it might be. Do you know if many 400's came with a nodular crank?

Awesome, at least I got someting good out of my project. Everything else on the car was rusted and damaged beyond repair. I'm going to talk to a machine shop this week that is supposed to have experience with Pontiac motors. I'd like to stay local if possible, but there's not that much choice in Reno. If I don't like what I hear, I may have to check out shops in Sacramento.

If you don't already have it, I would recommend Jim Hand's book 'How to Build Max-Performance Pontiac V-8s'. It is the best out there.

I bought it almost a year ago and have read through it a few times already. The more info I can get, the better. Thanks

So, I was looking at Butler's choices for the stroker and I'm trying to figure out the main differences between the 461-467 kit and the 455-468 kit. Is is just the stroke? Also, I forgot to mention that my block is drilled and tapped for 4-bolt mains, but has the 2-bolt caps. Should I be upgrading to 4-bolt caps for my power range?

Thanks

those are the kits i was looking at for my build. i have a 73 400 block. I called butler performance and they are very knowledgeable. My recommendation would be to call them. They can help you out with any questions or concerns you have. Very nice people. When i have the money i will be sending/delivering my motor to them in TN.

With 96 cc heads I'd be looking at the 4.25 stroke. With maching a little off the heads, zero deck and a .040 overbore you're looking at the 461 kit and about 9.5:1
Nice healthy street engine.

Main difference between the kits is the main bearing size, they use different cranks.

Caps are a toss up, not needed on the street, and some say given the straight main cap threads the block is weaker than a 2 bolt main block, with or without the 4 bolt caps.
Personally if I were going to race it I'd add them and stud the bottom end, street and occasional strip use, no.
