My original is broken. I thought I saw original GM is available as well as a repro. I gave my dealer the part number off the back 478570 and he says it is "not a good number". Anyone have a superseded number?

The PN was 478573, which is probably no longer available. The repro unit is, I believe, made by OER.

Thanks TA. I found another GM on Ebay this morning, did the BIN. I already had the OER repro and the font is different than the original. WHen I get the Gm piece, I will post pics side by side. The OER is very nice otherwise.

I will never understand these guys. They go to all the cost to tool up parts and then screw up the font...

They have the same PRNDSL, but the fonts are wrong on the OER. At least compared to the one that came out of my car, which has GM#478570 on the back.
Let me see if I can get a picture with my cell... |

Ok, received the GM part today. It appears OER used this latest revision for their repro based on how close the font is.
Left to right....Original, OER, GM Replacement Left to right...GM replacement, OER, Original Came new in GM Box OK, so the font on the new GM is clearly different than the original. I guess I should disassemble the original, and see if I can save the lens with the lettering and transfer it over to the new GM part. |

I believe that GM changed the letters from "PRNDSL" to "PRND21" sometime in the late 70s. The part number 478569 has carried both styles over the years depending on when the part was actually made. Maybe someone more experienced with the late 70s cars can chime in as to when the letters were changed in production.

While your statemeny may be true in general, I can tell you the OER and new GM are not the same.

Bought a repro "thin" shift indicator lense, and it is almost dead on for my original. Now just have to remove the annoying push clips from the plastic studs and swap the lense out on the new GM.
pic is:Original....repro lense....NOS GM shift plate/lense |
