Default Removing 69 Auto Shifter Knob

Is there a sure-fire way of removing the walnut knob and button without dinging it?

I like to take the lower snap ring loose first, slide the knob down & then pull the release button off last. No dings in the plastic this way!

There are two snap rings that keep the knob in place on the shift lever. One underneath the knob to keep it from sliding down, and one inside the knob underneath the button to keep it from coming up. You need to pry the button off straight up to get inside and get at the upper snap ring.

Steve's method is a good idea. I never thought of that one.
