Default Throttle cable and bracket question

I have a 1965 GTO with a 428 out of a 1969 Grand Prix. The engine has Edelbrock Performer RPM Heads, a Performer Intake, and a Barry Grant Speed Demon 850 Carburetor, the carb will be replaced with an Edelbrock 800. The throttle cable has broke and the throttle bracket is not the right one, it does not bolt down properly. Will I need a cable for a 65 GTO and the bracket for the 67 to 70 since the engine is a 69? Or do I need the bracket for the 65 to 66 since the car is a 65? I figure the cable needs to match the car so it will attach to the accelerator pedal and the firewall properly.

If anyone has experience in this area I would appreciate some advice so I don't waste time and money buying the wrong items.

Thanks

The 65 cable would be a good idea to go through the firewall and hook up right. I've read on here before that any stock Pontiac bracket wount fit the perch and head bolt mount position

It'll be a crap-shoot......If you were running a quadrajet and factory iron intake, then I'd say go with the '67 Q-jet cable and '67 bracket......but then again the '65 gas pedal is different than the 66-67.....and you're trying to run factory parts (cable, bracket) that were not designed for aftermarket parts (Edelbrock intake and carb)

If I were you, I'd go with a Lokar....with a Barry Grant or Edelbrock carb and aluminum heads and intake, an original factory look is probably not too important to you....Lokar makes excellent stuff...save your self a headache and do it right Lokar.....besides, it'll still work should you change parts in the future.

If you try to use the factory bracket and cable, you'll just end up cobbling them up to maybe (or maybe not) work right.

Thanks for the advice. I will check these out. It would be nice if Edelbrock made one to fit their intake, but that would be too easy.

I think there is a difference between 2bbl and 4 bbl cables. I ran into the same problem and had to rig up a bracket using a bolt with a stud on its head, afew washers and triming one of the cast mounts in the edlbrok intake. Pics to follow

They make a bracket to retro fit your original cable bracket onto....#8015 for the 65-71 cars....doesn't work all that great.....more cobbling, etc.

these are the pics, the casting in the edlebrock rpm performer intake was trimmed about 3/8th inch and the bolt with the stude in it's head came from hardware used to mount the rear alternator bracket to the driver side cylinder head on mid 70's pontiacs or it can be found fastening thermostadt housings on same pontiacs.

the hardware mounted on the casting boss on the edlebrock intake is an automotive stud screwed into the trimmed boss and held in place with JB weld. the one I used had course threads that screwed into the intake boss and the other end was sae fine thread

where the bracket mounts to the bolt with the stud in its head is fugly and I will correct it at some later point in time but for now it works ok

Don't know if this will help but my 64 setup is similar (e-Heads/800 CFM Performer/Performer RPM intake). I bought the car this way so I don't know the origin of the bracket, etc.

Thanks for all the help and advice. I have checked out a lot of options. I even called Edelbrock. They recommended the Lokar bracket and cable for the easiest installation. My biggest question with that system is where the cable passes through the firewall. Can you use the mounting plate off of an old stock cable and use it to pass the aftermarket cable through it, or will I have to fabricate something?

Koppster
I have seen the bracket that is on your car somewhere; I will try and track that down. Does the system use the stock cable?

Pontirag
Thanks for the pictures and advice. I will look into the option of modifying the perch to make a stock cable work.

FFD
I think the 65 cable would work if I could figure out some way to modify the original bracket. But, it might be more work than it is worth.

To keep from wasting money and to prevent a big headache I might use the Lokar or try and find the bracket on Koppster's car. It looks like it is using a stock cable.

It would be nice if there was anyway to figure out who makes the bracket or a part numbe. Is there anything on the bracket that tells who makes it?

I'll take a look tonight and see if there's anything...I took a cruise through Summit and saw some similar brackets.

I have found a lot that looks like yours, but not the exact one. Thanks

No brand name on it and I probably need to get some parts for mine or find a new one, taking these photos made me realize the cable is "clamped" to the bracket. Oh well, that's the kind of maintenance I did when I was 16.

Here's a couple of "close" matches from Summit:

Now, I'm looking for something better.

I saw those as well on Summit and Jegs. The more checking I do the more I think that 67Lamnas has the right idea. The Lokar are direct bolt and simple and their cables are stainless steel covered which adds a little dress to the engine compartment. Since the engine is not original I am not that worried about the engine compartment looking stock. As a matter of fact I am going to dress it up a little as time goes on. The rest of the car will look 100% stock. Thanks for taking the time to help.

It's not too difficult to make the stock throttle cable work, you just just have to be a little creative.

If you have a hacksaw, a few different hand files, a drill motor and a set of drills you can make it happen. Having access to a welder makes it even easier. Cut, drill, file, just do whatever it takes to put it in the right location. Maybe take a trip to your local hardware store and pick up a piece of 1" wide 1/8" thick steel flat stock, then cut it to length with a hacksaw and drill a couple of holes. Make a cardboard template to figure out what will work first, then go from there.

Installing aftermarket intakes usually means cutting or bending the original throttle bracket, or fabbing up another bracket to adapt it. In some cases I've had good results using the original bracket on aftermarket single-4 barrel intakes by just bending it some and adding a few washers between one or both bracket mounting holes and the intake.

Adaptation of a stock '64 cable to a dual-quad setup using part of a stock cable bracket:

Throttle cable bracket adapted from a '68 Firebird -4-barrel bracket from my Pontiac parts collection, this time on an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake:

Hopefully these will give you some ideas on how to get the ball rolling.

Now you've got me wanting to make mine better, some pictures I found via search and an interesting post on the subject:

http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...+cable+bracket

One of the pictures shows what is claimed to be a 65 throttle cable and bracket. From what I've seen in pictures this morning it appears you can either bolt direct to the manifold or use the Edelbrock adapater (?).

Wondering if anyone has a picture of a stock 64 bracket, catalogues don't show them (at least I couldn't find one)?

This Lokar looks real interesting for use with a stock cable, I'm thinking my stock cable would fit right in the top eyelet, just wonder if it woul be set back far enough (?)

Koppster,
Thanks for the link; it was a good discussion about the same subject. It also answered my question on what to do at the firewall. I actually was thinking of taking my original cable that is broke and cut out the portion where the cable passes through the mounting plate. Hopefully by doing this I can attach the new cable without having to use washers.

I appreciate everyone’s advice and help.

Here are some pics of a '64 bracket. Unless you have the '64-style heads and intake on your car the '64 bracket won't work quite as well as a '65 or later bracket. But if you're just cutting the top off of the bracket to use the part that attaches the cable for making up a custom bracket, then either type will work.
