Ok folks tell me what this could be. On my '68 GTO the oil pressure fluctuates from 30-45psi back and forth. This has happened before, I changed the oil and it didn't do it again for over a year and now it is happening again. I think it is due to some trash somewhere in the engine and partially blocking the oil pump pick up but I don't know.
I can change the oil and it will stop, any ideas? The engine is a 1969 400 with kaufmann aluminium heads. Thanks

There is a check valve and spring in the oil filter housing. I would take a close look at the spring. If it has broken it will cause the valve to open and close erratically, causing the condition you describe. If the filter is new, the pressure at the valve will be lower. As the filter collects more and more debris, the pressure at the relief valve will increase to a point that the valve will "flutter", causing the gauge to do the same.
Hope This Helps,

Why not change the filter before you drain the oil to see if the bypass spring like GTOBOB said or filter is the problem? If it still fluctuates and you drain the oil and refill and alls fine youll have narrowed it down.

Sounds good, getting ready for 4th of July party and I won't be able to get to it until next week. Thanks for the ideas.

Might be just a bad sender. Put a mechanicle oil gauge on it and see what the pressure really is.

Mine is doing something similar but varying almost the entire range.
