ANy idea as to why turning on the headlamps cause the temp and oil pressure gauges to peg out and the fuel gauge slowly goes to E.
turn them off and back to normal. Low beams also went out but high beams work. Found one bad ignition ground and redid it but dont see any more lose wires. The previous owner did a hei conversion and the wiring isnt the best in the world, but all connections are good on the splices. I see a few misc wires with plastic clips on the end but nothing to plug them into. Vintage air just did my car and Ive talked to them about the issue and can bring it back down to San Antonio to fix but would rather save some travel time and look for it myself. They didnt splice into the factory harness at all and infact removed the factory AC harness as they use a self contained system. Soooo does this sound like a bad ground when the headlights are turned on or ??? thanks |

Sure sounds like a bad ground on the gauge cluster.
What car? |

oops sorry 65 GTO
only thing I have yet to do is remove the drivers side ac vent and duct and look behind it. Its pretty tight over there with the ignition and headlight wiring along with the ac duct. This might be a good reason to order a new m&h dash harness with the hei conversion built into it... |

Just for grins, why don't you try putting in a ground wire temporarily?
Just get a connection to the metal gauge cluster and hook the other end to a good ground to see what happens. Charles |

It's a bad ground on the back side of your guages.
Did they remove your dash to do the install?

I believe they left the guages in but not sure.. as the factory controls are still oem looking but have electronic connections behind them now. I'll have to call them Mon and ask about that.
They re-ran new ducting to the drivers side vent under the key. Thats where a ton of wires are so I can see something being knocked off. I'll try some of your suggestions this weekend. I can always take it back down there but gotta borrow a trailer and take time off work so I think I can track it down myself ( hopefully) |

Sounds like they knocked off or broke off a ground wire.
I take it everything worked fine before they did any work? |

I always run extra ground wire(s), one each; from the back of the main cluster AND the 4th pod to a good sheet metal mounting underneath or behind the dash!

I did have time to mess with it much this weekend. I did reground a wire for the ignition though. Took a lil drive for 30 min fri and no overheating or other ill effects with the AC working. Nice and cold!!
I did notice my low beams went out but all 4 work on high beam. Might crawl back under the dash tonight. Thanks for the help/ideas |

That was my thought also, make sure you have power coming out of the bright/dim switch.

well dug around tonight under the dash again. Didnt see post about wiper switch till now. Will look into that.
But I think the hi/lo light switch on the floor might be part of the problem. When I clicked it every so often the lights would go out. Really it boils down to I need to replace the 45yr old wiring. But would like it all to work till then. The problem seems to resolved itself for now.. must have hit something while under dash and made a ground. thanks for the help and ideas |

Funny you say that, when mine went back in, (nothing was really different) it worked.
