Some of you might remember my story about running into a fellow Pontiac enthusiast at the local Wendy's; this is him: John Leahy. His car is in the Darwin Holmstrom/David Newhardt GTO book, towards the front:







The forecast called for rain in the early afternoon, so I brought my daily driver pickup rather than one of the old Pontiacs.



When I parked next to the guy in the Lotus I thought "oh, good - no door dings". What I did not count on was butt prints from the crowd of people surrounding that little car all day...

You "Pony-yak" guys might not care so much, but this is the old Chevrolet Central Office "Headquarters" building (as in "Central Office Production Order" - COPO). There is still some pre-production manufacturing in the shop areas, mostly prototype body builds, but the front office area, where the Chevy execs used to reside, is now vacant. You can see even the name has been removed from above the lobby.

I'll say this - some of the PPO Manufacturing guys sure have nice offices...(LOL)

This is a "Dort". I don't believe I've ever seen one before. J Dallas Dort was an early industrialist and GM financial backer, quite famous in the Flint area (as in "Dort Highway"):



A Kaiser-Darren. One of only a few hundred produced:








Anybody care to guess what this started out as?







And this, my friends, is why it pays to bring your daily driver to a car show; that's rain you can see coming down in the foreground. I guess we can see who the two hardest working GM Employee Car show participants were, eh? (lol)

Nice, We just had our Employee Car Show at the Research & Engineering Center in Dearborn, Mi last week.

Looks like you had a nice turn-out and hope you missed the rain.

A really nice location for a show, and what a variety of vehicles. All those '61 Catalinas in one place would make me swoon. Some realy cool old pickups also. And that Iris Mist Bonneville, whew!

Wow, tons of nice caes there. I was invited to bring my pace car Camaro SS there in August 2006 when GM made the announcement the Camaro was going to be built again. I was near the amplitheater hill. GM supplied us with lunch and some Camaro goodies. I got to sit in the silver Concept Camaro that day before it was unvieled to the GM employees. We stashed the car near a couple tall buildings on the complex. Got GM Vice Presidents Ed Pepper and Ed Welburn to sign my cars scrap book. Both even gave me their business cards. After this we went to the GM Hertiage Center. Fun day for sure.

Actually, I wrote the organizers ahead of time, and suggested that I could bring the Grand Prix/GTO combination (GTO on the tow bar) if they were interested. My real motivation was that I was fishing for a better parking spot, like up front by the display vehicles (lol).



Since I never heard back, and because of the threat of rain, I figured the truck was less risky...

Thanks for posting so many great Motor City area car shows Keith! Fun for me and my wife trying to guess if some the pictured cars are (or were) owned by friends. The first black 66 with the black interior and Hurst wheels looks like one I had a chance to buy from one of the fellow WGT members in the mid 90s. It was a beautiful original low mileage triple black Tri-Power 4 speed car. At the time it had a Pontiac Chief head that started the red pinstripe from the front.

By the way, my brother-in-law still works at the Tech Center although he is furloughed until November. Just like you at the car show, great work if you can get it! Jim
