Default Washer Pump Replacement

I recently purchased a new washer pump and it came with a new cam gear for the wiper motor (see picture). The instructions say to replace the old cam gear with the new cam gear before attaching the new washer pump.

1. Is this really necessary? The old cam gear looks fine. It looks identical to the new cam gear.
2. How do you remove the old cam gear? Is a gear puller required, or can it be gently pryed off? Can it be removed without removing the wiper motor from the car?

Thanks!
