Cremate? Bury?
My brothers and I were discussing (laughing about his Daddyisms...) our long departed Dad. He was a piece of work. Took after his Mom. The subject of his cremation was brought up and it was duly noted that he was the 1st person any of us knew that had been cremated. Why cremated? Dad was the cheapest man in the world. He worked at the UAB medical center as an electrician and while he was there he discovered their medical cadaver program and signed up for it.
You die. They come get your body. (he was in Baldwin County, about 250 miles from UAB) They poke and prod and turn you inside out for a while then cremate you and send you via the mail back to your family after a year or so. No charge and thank you very much. So Dad was cremated. Me? Doubt I'll care at the time, but bury me. You? Little slow at work today.......

My parents were both cremated and scattered, per their wishes. I'll go that way myself, no need to spend a bunch of money on a plot of ground somewhere.

In all seriousness, my father was cremated as he wished his ashes scattered over the Pacific ocean where he spent a great deal of his Navy service. Felt good to honor his wishes. Jim

With funeral services well over the 12,000 dollar mark anymore being creamated makes more sense finacialy. Many people I know are getting the pre paid plans so their spouse and children don't have to worry about it. What I consider, is what would be easiest for the people I leave behind. If its easier for my wife and kids to have a cemetary to go to, then bury me. If they are to busy driving the cars I leave behind the just throw me on the dead pig pile. (Farm humor)

When I go, my wife wants me to be cremated and then pressed into a diamond type gem and then set into a ring. Yes, they do that now.
Me: I really don't care but I'd rather my money be given to those in my will instead of the funeral parlor/cemetery.

Just cremate me as well. With all the expense and taxes involved, it would be nicer to save the family any extra expense. I should tell my son to pack some of my ashes in the parachut for the end of my last pass.

I've been trying for years to convince Sandy to cremate my remain. It's a purely economic
propostion. My remains would require an oversize casket (I'm 6'7"). Those caskets run around $4000-5000. Then, you have to have an oversize vault. By the time all the expenses are tallied, she'd be out around $10,000-12,000. Cremation is around $1500-2000. Makes perfect sense to me!!

Depending on state laws, if cremated within a certain time frame you don't even need to be to be embalmed. That saves quite a bit of money as well.

Cremate me. Both my wife and I have decided on cremation. For all I care she can dump my ashes in the toilet and pull the handle afterwards. Funerals are for the benefit of the living not the deceased.
As a side note, I can't remember if I read this or actually talked to a person about this but A father/son team restored a classic car together. The father eventually passed away and was cremated. Every year on the father's birthday the son takes the urn with the dad's remains and takes him for a ride in the car. You couldn't do that if you were planted 6 feet under. |
