Default Modifying BBC headers for a Pontiac?

Anyone ever look into modifying BBC headers to fit our Pontiacs. I really would like to try headers that are larger than 2" on my car and there is a good selection of BBC headers that would fit my car at a reasonable cost. I was thinking instead of having a complete set of headers fab. up maybe it would be cheaper/easier to start with BBC headers. What do you guys think?

Maybe a stepped header from your Pontiac 2" flanges then find a way to transition between the two. Have welder and patience? lol JD

After heavily modifiying a set of BBC headers for my BBC, I would seriously consider building my own headers in the future.

BBC is EIEIEIEI, whereas Pontiac is EIIEEIIE. I could see them working for a RAV possibly. SBC is EIIEEIIE but a very different angle than Pontiac.

Just my .02

#1 problem with BBC headers is starter/oil filter location. Opposite the Pontiac!
IMO look at BB Mopar apps as they have the starter on same side plus most have torsion bars to clear so they too have tight space to work with.

Forgot about the starter being on the other side.

About 20 years back, I had the same dilema with my jet boat project. There were no Pontiac headers available. Found a set of nice used BBC headers and successfully modified them to fit my 428. the mods I did worked well and I still have the headers to use today. Have now modified them further to fit the round port layout.
Of course, I did not have the starter issues you may have in a chassis car. Still, if you find any in your area for sale, or even know someone who has a set they are not unsing, you may be able to borrow them for a test fit to see just how practical it may me.

Just a thought.

I though I had heard it mentioned that if you were starting with another make of header to convert to a poncho.....to start with some mopar hemi headers.

Then you have the angle where the header attaches to the head.

90 degree compared to roughly 120 degree for a Pontiac.

I had a custom set of headers made here in the Twin Cities by a good friend and custom header fabricator. Let me know if you are interested in his contact info. Mine are stepped 2.125 to 2.250 inch. These headers were worth 40 hp over a set of 2" headers in my pump gas 468.

I used a set of 2" BBC headers on my Pontiac but I chopped them up first and then welded them to suit.

Anyone ever try a set of Buick headers to modify? A friend of mine is running a set of 2 1/8 on his stage 2 setup. Ports are very similar to round port pontiac.

It don't take much to rework the buick headers. And they have the larger primaries avalible.

Agree with Lansing. Rather take a hot poker in the eye than do it again.

Jess Tyree made a set of headers for my 535 and you can go as crazy as you want size wise. He uses a flange that bolts to the block using a tapered flat screw. The bolt holes for the header to bolt to are spread out so your tube size is not limited. I'm sure he'd sell the flanges to you.
