I've always liked that article, with all its detail about the complex transaxle deal. Goldsmith sure drove the wheels off the thing, winning that 250 race in the rain- averaging over 150 MPH for the whole race! He put at least one 427 'Vette (and other "sporty" cars) to shame.

heres the link, there is another issue in 63 that talks of the SD cars, i'm at work so i can't pick the pics apart, there is hours of reading here, its pretty cool stuff. this mag is the 63-06 issue, you can read it clearer through this site, almost all of the 63 issues talk of the sd motors. Dan. one issue even talks in detail about the alluminum manifolds.

Nichels is where my father and older brother had thier machine work done during the 60's/70's.
They also supplied alot RA/SD parts our local Pontiac dealer couldnt get from GM.

Goldie had the trick for that race: stay up as high as possible, let the water run down the banking. There is a great pic of him going past a very surprised looking Bob Grossman in the GTO Ferrari heading into the banked turn.
Dunno if it was Ray or Smokey who figured out how to channel water over the transaxle so it would not overheat. And to close the Pontiac loop, wasn't it Grossman who was going to supply a Ferrari GTO for the infamous Wangers/David E. "GTO v GTO" stunt? |
