800hp+ cars with exhaust?
You guys that have high powered cars with an exhaust on it, what are you running for the exhaust? X-pipe, straight pipe, muffler right off of the header? Right now my exhaust with x-pipe weighs 55lbs, I am trying to find a lighter alternative but still keep the car quiet (somewhat) for street driving.

Mine is a dual 3 inch through flowmasters. I do know it is restricting me pretty bad so i am keeping a sawzall in the trailer. LOL
Before the turbo I ran it on the other combo and I did not think it to be such a problem. I would suggest that and have a set of cut out traps installed for the track.

I've got 2x3.5 headers so I have 3.5 pipe into 3.5 X then thru 2 3.5 bullets and turned down. Fabbing headers this off season with 4" collector or bigger and I hope to match the collector with exhaust pipe and muffler id size - still thru X. Also might use alumunized piping for weight.

vibrant performance sells these tiny little mufflers
I think they weigh next to nothing, something like 3 lbs each? I can't find you a link to them, but alot of guys on the bullet use em |

Dynomax bullets off the collector 3.5-4 in outlet, The headers are off the sheld 2x3.5, we used 4 in muffler and welded on a smooth transition adapter. Its loud but you could still drive it old cars don't have to conform to exhaust noise at least not here. Before on the other car (80 bird) we ran a 3.5 x pipe with flows to the rear axle, was very heavy!

3.5 inch dual to a pair of Borla Shootouts, no 'H' or 'X', with a turn out off of the mufflers in front of the rear tires.

what about using a short muffler, 6" or so, as a 'H' pipe? they claim a 'H' will quiet the car somewhat. so would a muffler inplace do more?
im in the same boat trying to lighten my exhaust while keeping it 'tolerable' on the street. even with three bullets, one 6" and two14"s, it would be lighter than the two flowmasters that i have now. not sure about quieter tho. |

I ran 142 mph on 15 lbs boost (only from 1/8th mile on). Full exhaust 3,5 collectors, 3" Ultrafows, 2,5" bullets before the tips. Nice and quiet.

I run 4" pipe from the collector into an X-pipe, 3 1/2" out of the x-pipe into Ultra flo-welded round mufflers with turn downs. It's about 3 times louder than SLOWBIRDS Firebird. I think you will be able to lighten your exhaust, but I don't think you'll be able to make it quieter.

Everything the same BUT I used "Marman V-Band Flanges" with "Adjustable Lever 'Over Center' Latch" Clamps to be able to use a factory type quiet Walker Muffler when driving on the street and still have the ability to remove the mufflers in about 15 seconds if I was doing "performance tuning" on a two lane black-top road with the assistance of another vehicle (used to verify my speed). (;>) http://www.oakridgebellows.com/metal...on-flange.html The "harder to use V-band clamps" http://www.spdexhaust.com/VBK_B.html Here is the quick disconnect clamp I used: http://www.hosenow.com/lvrovr.htm Took a little bit longer to reinstall the parts, (maybe 5 minutes) but was worth the reduction in harassment and sometimes tickets due to noise. Tom Vaught ps When you drop the mufflers you also remove their weight from the vehicle.

Brian,
Might want to check out this article on building a "zero loss" exhaust system for some ideas on your exhaust project. I can't really say if it would "lighten" the exhaust system, but having a "zero loss" as far as horsepower and all at reasonable sound levels would definitely keep certain people off your ass while going for a cruise. As already mentioned the Burns Stainless is about the lightest i know of as well, but will be a give and take situation and probably be considered way to loud for "street" use. Then again i guess every situation is when you get to this level of performance and the decision is made to keep it "streetable" or just a race car. Good Luck. http://www.superchevy.com/technical/...exh/index.html |

OOOOH if that's the case, my current exhaust would be just fine. The last time I was pulled over was about 12 years ago and the cop told me he really just wanted to look at the car. But I think if I was in high school and the car was gray primer I would be getting a ticket for loud exhaust on a daily basis.

If you get creative, you can lose weight from changing the exhaust. The configuration will dictate how much. The configuration I ran the past few years wrapped around the rear subframe and ran along under the rocker panels with bullets and turn outs past the rear edge of the doors. The total weight of the headers, mufflers, and turnouts was 52lbs. The new headers run forward with the sound being dampened by a pair of vibrant mufflers with exits ahead of the front tires, the weight of the headers, exhaust tubing, and mufflers is 22lbs.
*ignore the core support in the pic, this was during the surgery needed to make room for the radiator and a couple other things... The vibrant mufflers were lighter compared to the Burns shorties I weighed them against, the price was cheaper as well. You could put two vibrants on each bank and the weight would be comparable to the Burns. |
