Scored a free snowblower today-with a hitch LOL.

Long story short, I met an old lady at Home Depot a few months ago who asked me if the truck I was driving was mine, I said "sure, why?" She wanted to know if I could deliver some mulch she wanted to buy because the bags were too heavy to get out of her car and home depot wanted "to rip her off for 60 dollars to deliver and she didn't trust the mexicans and the darkies"-her words. She said she could pay me for my time so I agreed,
she was close by and I had the time. I bring the truck to the back and she loads me up 30 bags!! Oh crap, I thought it would be 4 bags or so. I said I would do it so here I am delivering mulch for her, not too big of a deal until I had to haul it all to her back yard! We got to talking and she turned out to be the proverbial sweet old granny, widowed a few years ago, her husband was a WWII veteran, he built her house, did the yard and all that kind of stuff. So anyway I finished up and was getting ready to go, she brings me a beer and some cookies LOL.
She offered me 10 dollars for my services, so I fgured she didn't have much $$$ and 10 dollars in 1940's money was big time. I told her the beer was fine and the cookies were the tip. Damn good homemade cookies too.

She has called me once in a while since then to fix this or haul that, the cookies are always good and the beer always cold. Today she called and asked me if I could help her get her car dug out and shovel her sidewalk since she hurt her hip She had an old snowblower her husband bought a long time ago and I could use it.
The blower was a beast, at first i was bummed because it was electric but man that thing can throw snow! It is an old Sears one from the 70's, it weighs about 70 lbs and is all metal-quality stuff. I recon probably 40 lbs of it is the motor. Anyway I wound up doing the whole drive and her sidewalk and her neighbors drive too. It was fun cause the snowblower was awesome. When I was done she asked me if I wanted to use it for my house, naturally I jumped on that offer. She told me I could keep it too if I wanted the only condition was I had to do her driveway when she needed it. Overall a good day.

So if anyone needs their drive done and you have a long enough extension cord, I'm there.

Abington is about 20 minutes from me, close enough you have no excuse for not coming to the second pontiac get together this summer at my house. (still in the planning stages).

They had them on clearance, last spring, cheap. I might pick one up. I figured electric is a good way to go for a snow blower. They sit a lot. You don't have to worry about the gas going bad, etc.

Because you are familiar with her history, I can tell that you have spent lots of listening/smiling/nodding time with her. You have already done more good than just clearing the snow or hauling the goods. The vast majority of older seniors have no one.

Those kinds of relationships/friendships might seem troublesome when they call once in a while, and you always spend more time listening, smiling and nodding than you plan to, but after they are gone, you miss them alot.

Good for you. Your reward is the relationship.

That is a great story and I have a elderly cople that lived across the street from me that used to babysit me and my sisters when we were little. Her husband used to do all the shoveling but hes confined to a wheelchair now. So since i was about fifteen I would shovel their snow covered driveway and cut their grass for them. Its been years now and I still do it. i didnt get no snowblower from it but that dont matter to me. i know that doing a good deed in life sometime someway sooner or later it will come back in return and also its good to see that there are good people still around. Oh and just let me know when and where for the get together im there !!!!!!!! Jayson

very cool story. you can be amazed what older folks will do for you down the road. when I worked for a subcontractor for the natural gas co. my inspector had 25 years in the Navy, & 20 years @ the gas co. well my wife & I became real good friends with him. he always said since he disowned his real children, he would leave us in his will. low & behold when he passed 3 years ago, his sister showed up with a very nice check. BUT I will tell you there isn't a day that goes by that I think about that crazy ole fool. (I'm about to pull a John Boehner.)

Years ago I got a snowblower the exact same way you did. It was even a 70's sears model. 24/8. That thing could move snow. Not only did I have to do her driveway and walk I had 5 other widows living around me. I would be out there for hours moving snow. I had to replace the transmission in it once. Sears still made the parts for it. The electric start is nice to get it fired up the first time. Pull start after that.

Any time you can help someone like this or just take time to listen, you are rewarded.

Just be nice and see where it gets you! You might even learn something.

Recently had opportunity to buy a 69 GTO Conv. because I helped someone and was nice. I still can't believe it.
