Default What's It Worth? 66 GP

Fellas -

I'm clueless when it comes to big Pontiacs, but what about a 66 GP with a 455/TH400? Interior is said to be very nice; seat covers good. Said to have a small amount of rust in the trunk (don't know if it's surface or rust thru) and small amount by the back glass. Hasn't run in 3 years, but owner believes it will fire up w/o any problem.

I'm thinking about picking it up, but have so much going on that it would have to be a pretty good deal. Really curious to hear what y'all think on value. Tried to find something similar that sold on eBay but not a lot of luck there.

Thanks!

Scott

Not original engine, cut dash, needs paint, needs bumpers chromed. HD weirdness on console.

Without seeing the undercarriage, it would be hard to say. I would just offer what it was worth given all the expense that you would have to put in to make it a decent driver. If the interior is really nice that is the value in the car IMO.

$3000-2500? I would offer less.

I'd bet a cup of coffee the minor rust around the rear window is directly above the minor rust in the trunk floor...those GPs with the reverse cove rear windows collect dirt and moisture in the window channel, which then rusts through and leaks into the trunk below. The only cure is to take out the glass and weld in new metal. This isn't necessarily a deal breaker (depending on just how bad the rust is) but it's a real common problem.

The dummy spotlights on the front fenders are an interesting touch.

Price is $3,500 obo. Looks like he's a little high on the price, unless that 455 has a set of RAV heads on it.

Thanks,

Scott

Stuart, Is it possible the spotlights are genuine???

I bought a spotlight for my '66 GP quite a few years back but never fitted it as I thought it might look a bit dumb. But they are shown (I'm fairly sure), in the '66 Accessories Book. Someone else might confirm that.

Odd wheels on it too. Plus the speakers on the rear shelf seem to be only floating about. WHY do people do these things????

And who's to say it really has a 455 under the hood? That might be what the seller is implying but without the codes it might not be so.

Engine looks too narrow to me. Wonder what it really is.

Cragars & the dummy spotlights will not attract extra buyers at that $! Looks like it has been in that spot for at least 3 years.

If it was a little closer I would go & check it out.

The mounting location of the spotlights leads me to think they're dummies - it looks like they're bolted to the panel between the hood and windshield, where there would be no way for the handle of a real spotlight to extend into the interior. The real ones are normally installed up on the A-pillar.

This reminds me of my old '66 GP. I'm all over this car at $2000. If it runs and drives and the brakes work, I'll do $2500. Good looking old beast. Too bad the original motor is gone.

It's on Craigslist in Winchester, VA for $3500.

Warning, I am cranky as I type this, but...

-Spots are 'dummies' and the other prior-owner 'enhancements' are detractors, IMO.

-Stuart's got it right on the rust...plus nothing like a bondo'd-up repaint to hide the truth.

-"will run" ain't RUNS and DRIVES.

Go to the bank and withdraw $2500 in cash. Put $1500 in one pocket, $500 in a second and $500 in another. Car starts and can be driven, $2500. Car can't be started, $1500. You use the 'this is all I have' line as you empty the appropriate pocket.

Good luck wit it.

Not too sure about that Stuart?? I remember looking at the one I have very closely and as I recall it, they mount through the air intake panel between the hood & the windscreen. You need to drill through that panel. Underneath the panel is a sort of elongated plastic plug which I think it goes through.

What I do recall is thinking if I installed it, if I wanted to later remove it, I would only have to fit the plastic plug back in and either repair or replace the air intake panel.

Then again, I might be totally wrong. I'm going to have to drag it out and look carefully at it.

Board member UPC-WU2 has a 1966 accessories catalog on his website, here is the picture of the factory spotlight: http://www.gt-37.org/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=2905. If you compare it to how the spots are installed on the car in the photos, the control rod would be going straight down into the firewall. They're typically installed through the base of the A-pillar, so the rod goes into the passenger compartment and the control handle is located at the upper corner of the dashboard.

Thanks Stig,

Shows I was indeed wrong.

Can you take a picture of your set-up and post it here? If I ever felt like installing the one I have, I could use your picture as guidence.

Ian
