Default 9.3 rear end setup

In process of putting together my 62GP that will see street/strip duty. Current gear is a 3.23 and unfortunately this will not work well with the motor/convertor. Will probably need to go to a 3.64. Although I've done quite a bit of mechanical work, I have never set up a rear end before, what is the level of difficulty or would I be better off finding someone with experience to do this?

Your money must get its hair cut in the same place as mine, LOL.

A rear end setup is a fairly mechanical process, for someone who has done a lot of wrenching but takes some finesse and some special tools. The main bugger is getting the pinion nut off and back on properly -- it takes King Kong and a quarter mile breaker bar.

Best to find a quality rear end shop to handle the job.

Not to hi-jack, but car crazy, I have a brand new set of 3.64 r & p gears available if your search is fruitless. I might be interested in the 3.23s...PM me on this if interested.

Doesn't really seem like much of a gear change to make it worth doing to me. I'd run it the way it is. Pontiac's don't need a lot of gear. If you want to change ratios at least go to 3.90. JMHO

Actually, the 3.64 ratio was the recommendation from Continental. A 3.90 might be ideal but car may see some time on the freeway and I've been down that road before! Motor in question is 629 HP and over 600 ft lb torque.

Engine Ear I very well may be interested. Will know in a few weeks. Haven't yet looked at the 3.23's to see what condition they are in.

I had 3:23 gears in my 77GP for a long time. To me this was the ideal gear for that car with the 455 and when I had a 400 in it. I changed to 3:42 and regret it. It was not a very big jump and maybe it was just the fact that I had 3:23 in for so long but I didn't like it. The difference of driving 60mph was changed from 2500rpm to 3000rpm with a 275/60/15 tire. Always felt like I needed to shift to one more gear. Sorry I don't have any hard data with 1/4 mile to many other things changed, but it didn't seem to pull any harder.

I have 3.42 gears in my car, and I agree it makes the car feel a little busy if you're driving on the highway for any length of time.

I have used about every big car ratio except for 3.55s and cant see the use for any of the in between gears.3.08s,3.42s.3.90s and 4.30s have been the best.3.23s,3.64s and 4.10s were not worth the change IMHO,Tom
