Default '63 Safe-t-trac Swap In

I plan to swap the one-legger for a posi in my '63 BV.
Of course I'll drain the gear lube thoroughly, but how clean does the axel housing have to be?
What type of fluid should I use and is it available at Advance or Auto Zone?
Thanks for helping.

As long as there has been no carnage (parts failure) in the rearend, since the axles are already out and the pumpkin, put some light source in one axle end to see thru and spray some brake cleaner thru the opposite side towards the center and just wipe it all out. Doesnt have to be perefect as long as nothing gritty in there. Autozone has a Coastal 80W90 in a gallon size is what I use and they also stock a limited slip additive (oreilly doesnt)called Equa Torque. Burnout pic required when finished

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping for. I'm tired of the one-wheel peel! I'm sticking with the 2.69 in the Bonny for gas milege purposes. Last year I got stuck for a few minutes on a roadside next to the beach so before that happens again I'm making the swap.

The GP already has a 3.23 in Posi in it.

You gotta use GM ltd slip additive in the black bottle. I have had no luck with the Amalie or others that come pre-mixed. Clunk city. I had to find mine at the AC Delco parts store.

Search in here for the topics with additive. Ford might work too, but there are some/many that will not work. Also check out the how to get the axle out topics. They can be stubborn sometimes.

Watch it when that sucker comes out of the housing! She be heavy.

Over the coming months, I'm doing the same thing--swapping out an open 3.08 for 3.64 posi. Great info. Thanks.

Dead head , I have used Equa-Torque on a bunch of limited slips rears of several types over the years and none had chatter and worked great! The GM additive has not had the Sperm whale oil in it for a long time..(thats what I heard..lol)

I appreciate the advise and am glad there are at least a couple of options. I've read about axel pulling with a bare rim and a few lug nuts (like a slide hammer).

Good luck with that! I tried like hell to get mine out and ended up picking up an axle puller off of Craigslist. Even with that they were really tight from being there for so long.
