Default How to ID which gears will fit posi

I know this has been brought up before. How do you tell which gears will fit your posi?

Mark is hooking me up with a 2 piece posi for my 62 Cat. I want to run 3.23s so I think that means there's a pretty good chance the posi will work with my gears. But is there a casting number to be sure or will I have to measure it? Does anyone have the measurement?

The cut-off, I think, is 3.42 for compatibility.
While on the posi topic, somewhere I saw the paint codes used on the axles (yellow is 3.08, yellow and green is 3.08 posi(?)). Can someone point me in the right direction?

The color codes for the rear axle hubs from my 60 shop manual are.....

2.69.....red
2.87.....orange
3.08.....yellow
3.23.....brown
3.42.....white
3.64.....blue

These are the single color swipes you'll find in the center of the axle hubs if you're lucky and they are still there.....these are for the open rear ends. If it's a safety track (posi) there'll be another color swipe....green in all cases. So you are correct yellow-green = 3.08 posi.

Maybe they went away from this on later years....I have no info on that.

The problem is I have no idea what this posi is out of or what gears came on it. I'm trying to figure out which one I have

By the way, which cars go the 2 piece and which cars got the one piece? Year by year? Factory? Gear ratio? HD non hd????
