Th-350 converter and 400hp
What do you think about a stock th350 converter behind a 400hp engine. Trans is built with good clutches and stuff and shift kit, but has stock converter. Will the converter hold up, i know it's hurting performance. Don't know if i should just leave it in there or swap it out before it takes out the trans, thanks- car is street/strip

I'm not a fan of 'em,not even the lower priced high perf. options to be honest.
Have a friend with a healthy 400 cid in a '77 GP,he smoked two TCI breakaways before he got a Redneck in there that's living OK for the time being. Sure it's a heavy car,but it has 3.90's out back,so it's not like he's really stressing the snot outta his converter either. In closing,JMO on this, but the torque converter is not the best place to cut corners in a HP build. A good converter is worth every penny it costs. Bret P. |

I've been beating on a couple of rednecks for about four years. Both leaving off the brake, one @3000 and one @ 4200+. Still performing good.

Hughes seems to be another decent/affordable option, and most of the "good" converter makers (PTC,Coan,et-al) have some decent lower level stuff that's not too bad price-wise also,so yeah there are good affordable options out there for sure. It's the lower level stuff from Co.s like B&M & TCI that I try to avoid, the bigger the company, and the lower on the food chain the converter is,the less I would expect in terms of overall quality. Ran Karen's car with one. Over 20,000 miles and nitrous and a ProCharger. Never an issue.
400 hp shouldn't put a dent in it. Keeping the tranny fluid from heating up is the MOST important aspect. That and i always used Type F in my GM units. |
