68 gto help
hows it goin fellas im new to the forum and i got a dilemna on my hands.
i have a 68 gto that is a couple days away from paint and i just came to my senses and decided that i want to take off the vent windows and give the window a cleaner look. 69 was the first year that they started making the coupe A bodies without vent windows from what im hearing. my question is can i just get a regulator and window from a 69 and install it on my 68 or is there a lot of fab work to be done? any info would be greatly appreciated fellas!!! -Andy |

Nope! You will need 69 doors, I guess if you had more money or time than sense anything could be possible. Just go with the 69 doors. Personally I think 68's look way better. Plus the vent windows dirrect the air right on you! Scott

i was afraid of that!
i dont mind the vent windows, its just i want to put the side bullet mirrors on the car and i feel that with the vent windows it will look tacky! what is it thats interfeiring? because the price tag on two new doors from a 69 gto seems a bit steep. thanks for the rapid responses! -andy |

I had the "bullet" mirrors on my car before the resto and if you are going to use the vent they will hit and probably chip the new paint.
I to like the non vent look, and some other things for the 69. I plan on getting a 69 ht for the next one.

aaaahhhh i dont see myself using the vent windows much and i see myself putting on the new mirrors.. i really dont know what to do now.

The 68 is a combination of old and new - new body, old vent windows & dash.
Embrace it for what it is, it was good enough for Motor Trend. If you still don't like it when you're done, sell it and buy a 69. BTW, welcome to the board - post a picture so we can see the car.

I use my vent windows all the time, even on my convertible. Love 'em! I even put the kick panel vent on the drivers side on my A/C cars. Like to have all th air movement when not using the A/C. Scott

The vent windows on the 68 are awesome! I couldn't imagine driving a hardtop for any distance without some air flowing. 69's utilized upper vents and actually had an entire ventilation system design that 68's did not have. To each thier own I guess... Sell it and buy a 69.

love the feed back guys!
the vent windows are starting to stick to me! i might just pair up the passenger side with a mirror also to keep it symetrical. 68 gto is my baby and ill never let her go. ill get pictures up soon! paint is gonna be done later this week! should be done with the paint in a couple weeks! -andy |

Vent Windows
Welcome to the PY Forums. The vent windows on your 68 make it unique to the car. The later 72 post cars are the last year for these wing windows. Hope you keep it OEM. Or you could trade up/down for a 69. I like mine.

or get a set of bullet mirrors and see if you can place them on the door where they don't interfere with the vent windows and then see if it looks alright.
I think the '68 has the mirrors further down the door compared to the '69 if you know what I mean, perhaps moving the mirror forwards a little so it's placed on the door as a '69 has, it might clear the vent window. I'm planning on adding some bullets somewhere down the road so to me this is an interesting thread.

Welcome!
Hint: Drill for the mirrors you want before painting the car. You'll avoid those ugly scratches when the drill slips, and the rust streaks when moisture attacks. Also, the engineers didn't remove the vent windows for styling reasons, or to improve ventilation. They were saving money. (Those puppies were expen$ive!)

I love vent windows, it is a sign of a bygone era much like the bench seat, carried on by pickups a little longer, until it too faded away. Am I nostalgic? Maybe a lil.

Love the vent windows on my 68. Would not consider getting rid of them if I could. Also love the switch on the dash. If you will notice, a lot of the new cars have the switch back on the dash.

ill look into the mounting of the bullet mirrors with the vent window, but until then im still not sure what im gonna do. (and its going into paint tomorrow!)
ive even thought about shaving the mirrors off completely and keeping the vent windows. i wouldnt be aftraid of tickets much because the car isnt going to be driven more the once or twice a month anyways. -andy |
