Has anyone seen a VIN plate like this before? Looks very strange. Listed for sale as a 69 GTO, and it's striped as a Judge.

Well 69 should have a plastic trim piece that snaps into the dash, you normally wouldn't see the rosette rivits. Looks like someone stripped the dash and VIN plate and didn't repaint the VIN. You can kind of see a primer line. Besides the missing plastic trim, it looks normal to me. Scott

Very early car! could explain the non-standard VIN. For what it's worth the tag is not installed propperly, they seldom are. The assembly manual clearly shows the rivots installed from the bottom with the tag located below the dash tabs. Even with the trim removed you should not be able to see the rosette's. My guess is the reason lies somewhere with the early build.

That is a Freemont Ca built car and that is how tags are, so it is correct.
Rivets rosette up is also correct for freemont car.

Seems to be variation plant to plant in how the tags were installed. My Fremont 70 Lemans is installed as pictured above. Every pontiac built car I have seen is how Paul described. Baltimore is yet another variation.

In 68 it varied by plant, I've seen the rivets up or down. The 4237 would be stamped once the type of car was determined. The 100001 would have been sequencial regardless of body style. So that is why the font is different. Even in 68 a Pontiac plant car if you look very close you can see the 4237 is not spaced as equal as the rest of the numbers. That is because all 13 numbers and letters were not embossed at the same time. Scott

That's an awfully early car to be a Judge, since the Judge option didn't appear until January. I'd be looking at the trim tag for more info.

Here are a couple of pic of 68 showing the rivets both ways. The Fremont one is from the top like the 69. Plus you can see the 3535 (different font) and the 3767 are offset just a bit.

Here's the link to the car. As I mentioned earlier, it's listed as a GTO, but striped as a Judge.
