Detroit Yes - Architectural Ruins
This is a pretty amazing website aimed at trying to preserve some of the history of Detroit. Many of the old automobile plants are now in ruins and may soon be nothing more than pictures and memories. Hopefully, a few of the historic plants can be preserved. These were the heart of the industrial revolution. A time when America led the world in everything - A time when America could do anything!

That was a pretty amazing tour. Tragic end of civilization feel. Such a shame so much was left to rot, and wrecking ball killed, and the buildings they build to replace them are so much flimsier (?) at least we have the cars that culture produced.
I read a news article about a year ago on old fixer upper mansions in Detroit. 50 grand or less will get you an architectural masterpiece with a dozen bedrooms and 6 baths and 3 stories. I want to live in an old factory! Play music loud, spread out the old car projects, it would be great.

Tons of old buildings that once were nice. I don't even like going to Detroit anymore.

Joel and Mike,
Great websites. Detroit must have been some city during the roaring 20's when many of those buildings were constructed.

Same here in cleveland, I love.to.drive thur town and hope not to get shot, and look at all the big old red.brick buildings and wonder what was in them at one time, steel mill, auto plant, I know one one that was turned into a hospital and its the old plant that my 1929 chandler was built in. I cry when looking at these buildings know all the job are over.sea and now we can't even build a barn in my yard without hoops to go thur.

One of my biggest fantasies would be to have access to wander through any of those huge old buildings. It would be nostalgic erieness at it's finest.

Check out this promotional film from 1965. With commentary from then mayor, Jerome Cavanagh. Ohh, the irony.
The mayor sounds like the drugged up puppet leader in in the Star Trek episode: Patterns of Force. Especially in the introduction segment in Part 1. It's creepy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKWtQ...eature=related Little wonder that comments have been disabled for all these segments. |
