61 Bonneville without air:
I have a one wire alternator I want to use. I know this has been done and it is probably easy with the right parts. Who has done it and what parts did you use? If you built mounts, do you have a picture? The wiring is no problem for me. |

Find an alternator bracket from a late 1962 or 1963 full size Pontiac without air conditioning. I believe the bracket off a 1963 Tempest or Lemans is the same thing. It's a cast aluminum piece.

I built my bracket for my '58. Just used some 1/2x1/2 angle iron I had. It did take some welding, but was pretty simple. I'll find the pictures and post them. Or, you could try the generic alternator/generator bracket. It's basically what I based mine on. Just put 'alternator generator bracket' into e-bay and you'll see some...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/UNIVE...Q5fAccessories I have not seen the brackets mentioned by stuart, as I'm not sure they would have worked for my '58..

Not the best pictures, but you get the idea. This is mounted to the stock generator bracket.

My 62 GP came with a jury rigged alt. that I had to figure something to do with. It wasn't lined up right and whoever wired it, did a terrible job. Wouldn't even charge.
Anyway, I went on a tear looking for brackets to get it right. Found a correct bracket, but then discovered when changing brackets around, you'll need to keep an eye on the pulleys too. After I found one of the aluminum brackets, I got it on the car, bolted on the alternator and that's when I realized, it's not just the bracket, but the combo of pulleys that work with it. Not trying to put you off, but be aware, you may need to deal with pulleys to get things to work proper. That or some fun extra fab work. It's all do-able though. |

I installed the 63 aluminum alternator bracket on my 62 catalina and also found the pulley problem. I got all 63 pulleys and istalled and lined up dead on.

With the adapter I fabbed up, it just took some patience but everything lines up and I just used the pulley that came with the alternator.

Do you use the same regulator as the generator or is the regulator different for the alternator? And what's the wiring procedure?

Honestly the bracket that posted the link to would be much easier. It's what I copied mine after and would probably be a lot quicker. I just welded mine up because I had the stuff around and was being...uh...cheap. I'm not a welder so it was also a good excuse to practice.
As for the wiring, it was easy. Since the alternator is internally regulated, you don't use the firewall mounted regulator at all. I opted for the three wire alternator, just because of the MadElectrical sites suggestion. Probably doesn't make a LOT of difference, but it's not that hard. Here are a couple of links about the wiring we've had here on the board.. http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=522992 www.madelectrical.com
