I recently talked to someone who has a '76 400 for sale. He says it will not fit into my '68 GTO because something about the way the mounts are setup (I think). I would assume I would change the motor mounts, but is this really true? I thought the 400s were kept basically the same throughout the years except for small details. Thanks.

Our host lists this:
RFE139B ENGINE MOUNT CONVERSION BRACKETS. (Inquire) so I am not sure they have them available. However, Ames lists them: N244A 1976-81 Engine Mount Adapter Kit (RE)..................... $53.00/kit Hope this helps. Erik

Some engines were drilled with multiple mounting holes to allow installation in nearly ANY pontiac that would have a v8. Some engines only had a couple of mount holes drilled/tapped. You can either buy the adapters or you can drill/tap the holes on the bosses that exist on the block.

Ok I will check into that, thanks. Good to know I can still use this engine somehow. Is it an easy conversion?

76 should have the early and late bolt patterns, 5 holes in each side, 77 was the first year to only have the late pattern 3 holes only. To answer your question 68 mounts should bolt to a 76 block, no adapters needed.

Sirrotica is correct.
The problem is going the other way - you need an adaptor to put a 68 engine in a 76 car like a Firebird. 1970 to 76 engines will fit into any Pontiac car except the early front engine mount cars.

Ok so I picked up a slightly different 400. The big numbers to the side of the distributor say 550557, which is a late 75-76 engine. However it looks like this 400 only has 3 bolts per side and I don't think any bosses for any other mounts. I could be wrong.

Post a picture of the sides of the engine. I have a 77 400 4 barrel out of a Firebird that does't have the mount holes for the earlier 2 bolt mounts.

It's most likely a 77-78 as these are the only years that had only the late 3 hole motor mount bolt pattern. The year is most likely, but not always, 77-78, next to the distributor in 2 digit form there is also a longer date code cast in if the 2 digit number is absent. The 557 is probably the weakest Pontiac 400 block. Good at least for a strong street engine 450-500HP safely. Good to hear you finally found a usable block locally.

The numbers I have are:
Next to the distributor 9101 Front pass. side WA (no numbers above that) Front lower driver's side 27N108574 Hope this helps. The engine has a mild cam and some work done to it. Is there any way to strengthen anything on this block? Last edited by codyyy; 03-14-2011 at 11:33 PM. |

I'm guessing I'll need to buy adapter plates. My coworker looked at the engine and said I can get away with reringing the engine again and honing it, however he thinks I got screwed on the price. I paid $700 for the shortblock. It was either this or a running $650 76 GP motor with unknown miles.
