Default Converter swap track results

Drove my 4200# 69 GP steet car to RT.66 raceway for test & tune today .

462 KRE heads, Comp street roller, 850 holley , Edel RPM , 3.73

I've been running a Redneck 3800 stall and switched to an 8" ATI 4200 .

On the street the 8" Ati drives great . Locked up tight, pulls harder .

Well it rained all day and night yesterday so the track had some water issues to deal with .
RT.66 is so SLOW ....

So.. only 1/8th mile racing today .

Previous times with Redneck converter 7.54 @ 90 mph

New times with ATI converter 7.39 @ 92 mph.
So it picked up a little .

Can't wait to run in 1/4 mile .

Nice gain! Goes to show why it is worth buying a quality converter.

ATI makes a very nice convertor. I use an 8" 4400 treemaster...

Great news! .4 quicker in the 1/4 for me with a converter change, you might do better than that. What do you mean test and tune, I look out the window and still see a small pile of snow.

You fail to mention if the Redneck was in fact an 8" convertor also? If not apples to oranges. Youd be supprized how may people are giving up performance running 8" convertors in Pontiacs that shouldnt be.

There's zero indication of a problem with the Redneck converter. The track conditions, weather, tire age, and the pure fact he went from a 3800 converter to a 4200 converter put him into the power range farther. Add in the fact the Redneck should have been a 9.5" unit which actually measures 10" and the ATI is an 8" results in less rotational mass.

I'd like to see the time slips to compare the 60' times of each while verifying the DA and such for each day as well.

The ATI units are very good but not cheap costing 2X as much as the Rednecks when they were available. A better comparison would be a 4200 Redneck to the 4200 ATI. JD

Getting 4200# car to run 7.39 in the 1/8th should be a solid 11.60 1/4. If all is matched and coupling well.

71 Ventura II. There is thread after thread here on PY and proof at any track anywhere that buying a quality matched to your combo converter is worth every (double/triple the cost) penny of a cheap off the shelf converter.

Don't be upset about your choice. Everyone does what they do as their choice.

If someone can avoid buying the cheap converter the first time, they are much better off and will save themselves cash in the long run as they step up the game. When you get to a point it is how much does this next tenth cost? So is 370 worth .4? I'd say so. I am spending double that now and am lucky to gain .04!

I believe he has run 11.60 with the Redneck converter.

Can you describe how the Redneck ~9" ran on the Street? Mushy?

I didnt see any post about his Redneck Conv being off the self? Hes comparing two different conv. Ive run all brands of conv in the past and my 9.5" Redneck did exactly what it was built to do. FWIW It replaced an over priced 8"ATI You spend to much time on the net reading unproven information and gossip. A conv needs to be built for the combination. It has nothing to do with how much you paid for it being correct for the combo.

Thanks guys , I had been running that "shelf" Redneck 9 1/2" 3800 converter for about 3 years . No problems , performed well ($289.00 off ebay ) . Fit my budget at the time .

I just wanted to try a converter that I thought might be better coupled to the Hp & torque this motor is making (550-575) . I was not expecting huge gains, but I can defiantly see the difference . Even after only a few 1/8 mile passes . 60ft was 1.61
I really need to play with launch rpm (was leaving @1800 rpm ) tire press. shocks ect...

Car usually runs 11.80 -11.90 @ 113 with mid 1.60's 60 ft. depending on the weather and track . with a 11.60@115 mph being the best in 45* fall air.

Driving manners... the ATI 8" on the street is what surprised me, very similar to the RN, it needs very little throttle to accelerate(even pushing #4200 lbs ), does not feel "mushy" and when its locked up it pulls HARD . Mind you it's not as tight as a "Jim Hand" style Continental ,I had one of those and It was good, just to tight for me.

After I make a few 1/4 mile passes ,I'm going to swap my RPM intake for a Northwind
I'll post my results.
