Will be moving to Houston next month. I willl be starting work on my 68 GTO which is there now has been stored for last 15 years. I am going to rebuild the engine and would like to know if any members in the Houston area have any recommedations for a good machine shop for block and head work. Im not worried about price, have had bad experiences in the past with bad machine work, so i have no problem paying for good work. Thanks for any information.

I'll throw a name out there to get this started. Harris Engine and Grinding 281-458-7696.
They don't do head porting but do head machining, anything to a block including line hone on the large main blocks. As a bonus, the guy that does the block machining spent ten years working on Pontiac's. The price is reasonable, they do good work, but time can be a problem. They are busy, so you may have a wait depending on circumstances at the time you need yours done. I'm sure you'll get other suggestions, this is just one option.

Westside Performance & Machine Inc
9100 Emnora Ln Houston, TX 77080 Dan Barton works out of that shop. In my opinion he is the man when it comes to heads. |

Which part of Houston? This is a BIG area! I'm in the Clear Lake area, southeast of downtown. Right by Hobby Airport is USA Racing, Bruce is the manager and he has machined several Pontiac blocks for me, and typically has 2 or 3 other Pontiacs in his shop everytime I go there. They should be able to handle basic head work, but if you need more than that I'd suggest shipping your heads to SD Performance. I have USA do the machining, and I do my own assembly. Welcome to the area, Lee Atkinson

I'vr used a couple around town. as Lee said a BIG area. I've used G&G up near Tomball for alot of stuf over the years from when they were Wycliff Machine. I've used Westside ffor some blocks and Dan for heads there. I've heard good about USA also for others besides Lee.

Thanks guys, I acturally will be moving to Pasadena, I am originally from there, have been away for 20 years. I know a lot has changed and wanted to get some input on shops. It will probably be another year before i start the engine work but i figured it would not hurt do do some checking. The car will be seeing serious strip duty and I dont want to scrimp.

Stay away from G&G, period. The attention to detail is pathetic.....tolerances are all over the map. Too many problems for many pontiac customers in the area.
I'd talk to Graham over at Owen's racing engines in Pearland. He's a Pontiac guy and knows how to build them.

I live in Pasadena and took my 400 block over to Houston Engine and Balancing. Simple clean up, and bore/hone with torque plate. Hard people to deal with, won't return calls, and the engine was absolutely filthy on the inside when I got it back.
Stay away, go to Owens in Pearland. Britt
