I'm new to the PY forums. I bought this 65 GP with a 389. Its been sitting since 1974. I had the motor turning over trying to get it to start. Then late yesturday it stopped turning. Went out and messed around with it and got it turn over, but it turns so far one way then stops. Turns back and stops. So any ideas? My guess its something to do with the valve train. Thanks

Is there a clunk when it stops turning? How far can you turn it before it stops? 1/4,1/2,full turn, almost two?

Sitting a long time, I'm thinking a valve stuck open. Piston hitting it.

Or a lifter stuck. Or a valve stuck shut.

I had this happen once, took the heads off and one cylinder had rust in it all the other cylinders were fine. No matter what i would pull the heads as have a look, cant hurt.

or rust build up on a cylinder wall, but forcing it to crank over might breake rings

It was turning over all day long. Now it turns over more then half. There is alot of sludge under the valve covers. I know I need to tear the motor apart, but right now I want to get it running enough to get it off the street. The car only has 70000 miles but PO didnt take good care of it. On another thought weres a good place to get a ignition lock cylinder with keys? Thanks for all the help.

Motor turns over only 180 degree's. I dont think its the valves. Going to pull the fuel pump.

I pulled the intake and the fuel pump. I'll check the lifters tomorrow. All the rocker arms seem to be the same. Still could be a valve I guess. Motor stops when #5 and #8 piston are at the top. Noticed loose debris in #5 spark plug hole. Looked in the fuel pump hole at the timing chain looked ok. Most likely going to pull the heads. Like Pontirag and chubiw1 suggested.

Found the problem. Carbon crud in the #5 cylinder. I dont think this motor has been rebuilt. The cylinders look good. What can I put in the gas since it most likely it doesnt have hardened valve seats?
