So, I've been trying to take my car to the track several times now, but the thought of having to remove the trim rings and center caps from my Rally 1's everytime has me thinking about getting a new set of alloy rims. I want to stay on the 15" category, I would move to 16", but tire selection seems extremely limited, so I will stay with the 15's.
The candidates: ![]() Torq Thrust D ![]() Vintage Wheel Works T40 ![]() Cragar SS ![]() AR T70R The car: ![]() I know they all kinda look the same. Not sure whether I want a blasted finish or more of an anthracite look. Will probably be running redline radials on them, with maybe a drag radial on the rear. Assuming a 15X7 wheel in front, maybe 15X8 rear, what offsets and backspacing will I need? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Aloha,
I was in a similar boat, I have a 66 GTO, with about a 2 inch drop all the way around. Looking for something close to the original tire height, started with 15's, and then 16's, but I keep going back to 17's. The rim and tire selection seemed better and my gut kept saying 17'sh will be around allot longer the 16's and possibly 15's. I then saw a post from Dave Anderson (here in our forums) about Hurst style rims that he was selling.and after quite a few emails, I am happy to say, I am a proud owner of a set. I also received the Hurst caps, and after getting a set of the reproduction sticker (for the cap) the rims look awesome. They are 17 x 7 with 4.5 back spacing riding on BF Goodrich KDW (245/45ZR17.) No ride issues what so ever and the 'thumbs up' while cruising around just adds to the icing of the cake. Good luck with your hunt. I have include Dave's site information and you can see what the rims look like. The look much better in person. One of this day's, I need to up date my car's picture with the new rims and paint. There is always tomorrow. Dave's site. http://www.4mypontiac.com/wheels.htm Mahalo, Rikk

Thanks for the response. I like those rims but the problem I have is that I have std disc brakes up front and drums in the back. My personal preference is to stay with a 15" wheel for this reason. If I had a big brake kit these would be more fitting. I just don't like having too much open air space with smaller brakes - just doesn't look right to my eye. Good looking wheel though!

Greg, I had Wheel Vintique out of California build me a set of plain Jane steel wheels for my slicks for when I go to the track. I had them build the wheel with the back spacing I wanted and had them powder coated Argent Silver. I just run the rims bare, no trim rings or hub caps with the slicks installed. As for the front wheels I just run with my HURST wheels and have never been asked to remove them.
They (Wheel Vintiques) have worked out very well for me and as you know I run my original HURST wheels full time. Nothing can take the place of the spectactular original HURST wheels in my opinion. Maybe Wheel Vintiques can guide you in the right direction for a set of slick rims or modify a matching set of Rally One reproductions for the width of your choice as well as your back spacing desires. They were very nice to work with. One last thing Greg, I run 4 3/4" back spacing on the Wheel Vintique steel wheels and this plants the slick dead center in my rear wheel well but keep in mind that I have original Red plastic wheel well liners so you have a little more wiggle room. If you would like Greg, I will dis-mount my slicks and send you the rims to try if you like, just pick up the shipping. They were really inexpensive to have made so that may not be worth the expense, they were only like $ 75.00 each but it is an option. Tim john--- Last edited by Tim john; 06-16-2011 at 01:08 PM. |

That's an extremely kind offer Tim john, thank you. Let me see what I can get worked out over the next week or two, I'd hate to put you out. Stockton wheel is very close to me, an hour and a half by car. That is a great option though - run std wheel tires and then swap out a dedicated drag set. Get the best of both worlds
I'd love to get a set of Hurst wheels, though I need to bring myself up to speed on the differences as well as assembling a good set. One day I will own a set, Lord willing. They are unquestionably the best looking wheel for a 65-67 GTO. Guess I'm kinda leaning towards the Vintage Wheel Works T40 at this stage - seems to be the most period correct from what I'm reading, and it will clear the discs I added upfront. Quote:

Good looking wheel Scoob. Looks very traditional and classic but without all the fussy "steps" you get with the later model repros (if you look at the T40 in the pics above, it looks like the hoops, or shiny outer band, steps out about three times - cheapens the look a bit IMO)

I dont know if they do the Chrome Rally I's anymore.... dont see it on their website.
But I bought these from Specialty Wheels. No more trims rings either, since they are all chrome. 15x7's in front 15x8's in rear Check website for backspacing.... http://www.specialtywheel.com/wheel-...-rallye-i.html

You and I have identical GTO's! Tyrol blue with the black vinyl top. Anyhow if I ever buy wheels for my car it will be the VWW V-40's and I would keep the grey center on whatever you get. It would offset the color on your car very nicely IMO.

And another Tyrol Blue, black top checks in...
I custom ordered my wheels from Wheel Vintiques - well actually Summit Racing after talking to the tech at WV. Summit sells the wheels for less than you can buy them direct. No time is lost because the wheels are dropped shipped from the factory. The measured backspacing for the 8" rears came out at 5-1/4" and that's what I custom ordered from WV. The front wheels were 7" and were in the catalog with a 4-1/4" backspace and I just went with that. Probably also a good time to mention that I shaved the outer wheel well lip and made sure nothing but the frame would touch on the inside. My mounted slicks have a section width of 11-1/2" and they fit inside the wheel well with equal spacing on each side (1/4" equal spacing). This works fine for the drag strip, but I stick with nothing wider than 11" for the street because of tire slop when cornering.

Greg, Stockton is shut down. Read the post below that I pulled from another site.
Sorry to make this my first post, I'll post a legit intro asap, but I thought this was very important to lots of members. I live in Stockton, Ca and Frank Mauro Jr's death was reported in the paper today (Stockton Record). I used to work next door, father in law still does, and I guess Frank committed suicide yesterday. He had also stopped all shipping going in or out, and let on to his employees that buisness was shutting down, earlier in the week. Besides all the unhappy customers, myself included, it's still very sad news for his family, friends, and employees. I just figured that anybody with orders/deposits would need to know. |

I put Diamondback Classic redlines (Firestone Indy 500s) on my '67 along with some Rally 1s from Specialty Wheels. I asked them to chrome the outer portion of the wheels (Where the trim rings would go) since no trim rings fit.
I liked them better than my Rally 2s with the RWL Indys
