Default drum/drum brakes

I may decide to keep my 63 with the original drum/drum brakes at least for a while. However, I would want a dual MC. Can I use the 78-80 Fairmont MC that is suggesgted for a disc/drum conversion??

Default My experience.

Here is a post on my experience with the Fairmont master and 4 wheel drums.

http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=668458

I ended up using the Gremlin master cylinder that Gary recommended. I have not had the car out beyond the trip around the block. Everything seems good so far.

Default drum/drum brakes

Read your post and those that followed. Lots of good info. Looks like I will go with the Gremlin MC if I stay with the 4 drums for now. I'm not sure if you used a proportioning valve?? Also, this thought came to mind. Since 65-75% of the braking is done with the front brakes, would it make sense to put larger drums on the front instead of the rear?? Am I missing something here??

No proportioning valve is needed for 4 wheel drum brakes. Not sure what larger drum you are referring to for the fronts.

Gary Beemer said he used 11" Fords on the rear and Wilwood disc on the fronts. If I keep the 4 drum setup, it would seem logical to have the 11" Fords on the front. However, being a non-mechanic relying on others to do much of the work on my car, perhaps this is not a good option for some reason. Wish I could press a button and become a top flight clever mechanic but that ain't happening anytime soon. Thanks for your help! Not going to make Norwalk this year but hope to have car done by late Fall or Spring and attending functions and shows.

Gary Beemer has a conventional drive train in his car and he races it.

I have wilwoods on the front and 11" Fords on back on both the 61 and 63. I race both cars and have an adjustable proportion valve on each. I have never touched the valve and both stop fine too me. Also just use the stock single master cylinder.

Cool Now...

[QUOTE=beemergary; Also just use the stock single master cylinder.

that's just crazy!!! What stops you if something...anything...lets go? Wheel cylinder...brake line? Tech passes you at every track? I just find that one tough to swallow. Sorry. Ron

Default drum/drum brakes

Of course, what was I thinking. I know Gary has a conventional drivetrain. So I guess there is no way to increase the fronts. OK, I guess that's it. I just have to decide between drum or disc in front; single or dual MC. If I keep the drum/drum with the original MC, I could then use my power brake unit I bought from Tony deFoster. Safety says disc and dual MC but with all new lines, hoses and brake parts, perhaps a single MC is quite safe especially with a working emergency brake. Thanks for the help.

One thing I know, The hub off of a 61-63 will fit the front spindle on a 64-66 A body. Have put them on for mockup. I dont know about the 64-up backing plate fitting the 61-63 spindle. May be do-able. That would get a much larger drum brake on the front, but will put 5 on 4.75 hubs on the front of your early Tempest.

I used the 64-66 A body brake spring kit for my 63.

Default drum/drum brakes

Can I then assume that the backing plate from a 64-66 would fit? If so, how difficult would it be to find a couple? Thanks

I dont know about the backing plate. Bolts may not align. I do know the hub fits the spindle.

Can I assume then that you used the backing plate from a 64-66?

No, What I am saying is. I put a set of hubs from a 61-63 onto a 66 A body set of spindles. This was done to mount a set of polished slotted wheels that had the 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern. Just the hubs were used, no drums or backing plates. This was done for display only. I know the hubs are interchangable on the spindles. I dont know if the backing plates will swap. May fit, I dont know.
