Default 6x heads

I have a line on a set of 6x heads for relatively cheap that came off a running 400, are they worth picking up for $100? I don't have a use for them right now, but my understanding is these are good heads. Thanks

Yes worth the $100 do you know if they are 6X4 or 8s the for have smaller ccs than the 8s but the 8s are still a good head too.

I paid $300 for mine so I would say that's a pretty good deal.

I don't want to start a "you can't run above 9.x on pump gas" argument. But in general, if you happen to be looking in the high 8 to low 9:1 compression ratio, the 4's (with proper milling to dial them in) are good for a 400 and the 8's are good for a 455.

I'm heading out to look at the heads right now, where on the heads will it say if they are 6x4 or 8?

No arguement from me...:O many here like to live on the dangerous side. I have plans to be dangerous myself...LOL

There's too much good info. on how to build a 10:1 iron head engine, around. Not easy, lots of details. You only live once...

Should I not plan on putting the #8 heads on a 400? I have read that they came on the 400 originally?

Those heads will below compression around 8:1 I think. Good for 87 octane

As Conrad says, LOW compression, at least for a "performance" application. They'd be good on a "milieage" engine or a "torque" engine not intended for revs and where 87 octane is desired (truck). -8s are "ideal" for a 461 (400 with a 4.25" stroke..). -4s with a bunch milled off, are better for the 400. It has recently been "reported" of chronic head gasket issues with a pair of -8s milled "too far" (.075", and we stay with .060" MAX), on a 400.

Good buy!

Jim
