Default Subframe repair

I have a subframe off my 67 Firebird, with 3 out of the 4 body mount holes that are rotted out larger than they are supposed to be. I was thinking of repairing these areas by cutting out the rot and welding in new plates and hole sawin' them back to the original size. Has anyone done this, and have any pics, and or advice? I was thinking this would be a more cost effective way for me to get my subframe back in shape.

I had to do 1 mount on my frame. Here are some pics. I ground the weld smooth and drilled the hole out. You can't tell it was repaired.

That's great!! I wanted to make sure that if I went through with the fix, that I would be making the right choice. I'll grab some material soon and give it a go. Thank You!

So I got to work on the subframe this week and got the patches in on the front perches. Just a little grinding and they should be good. I used the other subframe to cut patches from.

That's one way to fix the rusted hole.

They sell repair plates now. They are a bit pricy IMO.

I repaired mine. I made a template out of cardboard and had a metal fab shop make them for me with the holes already done. I don't remember them being very expensive. Mine take up the whole mounting space area.

Thumbs up

Ah, necessity... the mother of invention. Excellent work saving the frame!

Do you guys know the diameter of the holes? My best rear mount hole is at 1 5/8. I don't have anything to go by, but i'd like to know if the new bushings are supposed to be a snug fit through the frame. The new bushings look to be 1 1/2. A soon as I get the rear mounts done, I'll be ready to get the frame blasted.

I would make the hole 1 1/2 inches if that is what the part of the bushing that goes into it is. Use a little silicone spray installing the bushings so they go into the hole nice and smooth.

I cut out the rear mounts off of the subframe that was on the car. that frame was in poor shape, but the mounts in the rear were in better shape than what I had on the subframe I picked up. You'll see welds around the edges, that was to strengthen them and get the holes back to the correct size.

I bought the repair kits in 04 when I did my wifes car. Ames or maybe Detroit speed? Anyway I felt they were worth it. Had everything done in one night.

Default sub frame

I remember the day at The Grove that i snapped my frame and tore the rear end out of the car. Dropped it on the rear 1/4's. Thats when we decide to do a custom 2x3 chassis for the car and the fiberglass front end.Hast be 15 years since that happened.
