Default Ross piston question

I have a friend with a set of rods and pistons I want to get but I want to make sure they are going to work with the combo I am trying to build.

They are ROSS pistons, they have 412F inside them, the bore size says 4.211 they have a .990 pin diameter and compression height of 1.30

I think they are for a 400 block with a 4.25" stroke and a 6.8 rod? Does anyone know for sure?

Chris

I went on wallace racing and used their calculator and it looks like it is for a 4.25 stroke but the bore would be .085-.086" over bore on a 400 block. I dont think they can go out that far safely. looks like they are a .060 455 piston.

does that sound right?

Think about this.... if you can go .060 over in a 400...what is another .015 per side gonna do? I wouldnt be afraid of it...especially in late '60s early '70s blocks....
Yes... 4.210 is .060 455

So your buddy does not know what size motor his Ross pistons came out of?

My 67 400 Block is .090 (4.211) and is probably gonna be 4.25 shortly, and has plenty of meat in the cylinders. The early blocks can take alot.

I once had a 59 389 at 4.21 bore... Stock is 4.06 That's .150" over. However those blocks were made before Pontiac adapted thinwall casting techniques. I may take my present 59 block to 4.25" if new sono backs up sono done several years ago at another shop with less sono experience. Yep some 400's 421's, 428's, and 455's can go to 4.25".

All of them can be sleeved to that bore.

sounds like for a 455 the 4.211 would make it a 474

I've never had a block sonic tested. What are they looking for? What is a good minimum wall thickness?

If you go on Ross website you can ask a question and they will get back to you quick. I believe we need to know pinn height, those will fit in a few apps I am sure but with the wrong stroke or rods might be in the hole way to much and have no comp.
