Default material under headliner question

Where can I find the backing material that was adhered to the roof of a car. It seems as it was some type of felt and it also went under the roof supports. I think they even used the same material as backing in parts of the quarter panels and inside the doors.
Working on a 1964 lemans.
Any ideas on what i should use?

I think (not 100% sure) that what you are looking for is called headliner insulation. If this is the correct term for it, PY sells it as part # RPI498 for 64-67 GTO, only $16. I would check with them to confirm it is what you are looking for.

I need to replace the same stuff on my GTO but plan to use Eastwood's version of Dynamat which is an adhesive rubber sheet with a foil lining to keep out heat and noise.

Another option......go to your local lumber/roofing supply store and ask for "Peel & Seal"
It goes under shingles and roof valleys. It' 36"x100' and about $90.00/roll, if I recall.

It's super sticky with and aluminum foil face. It's about 1/8" thick. I used it on the inside roof of my 62 Catalina and it worked well. I scraped the metal as clean as I could then rolled some fresh Rustoleum paint on it so the Peel & Seal would have a good clean surface to stick to.

I can't think that dynamat is that much different or better. Certainly not when you consider the cost difference. Just an option to think about.

As far as I've seen on the 60s Pontiacs I've had, there was no backing material in the doors or rear quarter panels of the A-bodies. Doors had a watershield under the door panel and that was it. Tho some do put some type of sound deadener inside the doors these days. There is a panel with jute backing that goes between the rear seat and the trunk to cut the noise, and keep warmth in the passenger compartment in cold weather.

A while back I went to Lowes and bought the Peel & Seal. It's in the roofing mat'l dept, they had 8" wide rolls, 25' long $16.00 IIRC. I didn't see anything wider, but I was using it under the dash and in the vent spaces. For floors and the underside of the roof, I would want something wider. The stuff applied easily.

I am going through this right now on my '70. The original material was made from jute, the same stuff some of the rear package trays are made from. Jute is an organic material, which is why it decomposes into nasty dust after about 30 years. I believe most suppliers do not reproduce this in the same material anyway (its usually a form of spun poly) so it won't be like the original. I decided to go with a more modern sound deadener like Dynamat or Raamat for this reason. Also, you might want to avoid using Peel and Seal or similar products that use tar instead of butyl for the substrate. In extreme heat they can come unglued and will also give off a nasty odor. This is a little dated, but lots of useful info here on sound deadeners:

I used the cheap foil insulation and applied it with a spray adhesive. You can see in the pics, some of it was white, and the rest was silver. I included a pic of the floor as well. I can't really say if it is quieter or cooler, as the windows are always open when I'm driving.

Tempest - In your second pic above....does that ripstop-threaded foil have the grey "jute" type material on the backside??

Thanks

no jute material at all, it is the same on both sides. Tucking the edges under and the spray adhesive worked very well.
