Dropped before installation and took a while for engine vibrations to knock the piece out?

Had a very similar thing happen in the 80's (man I am getting old). It was an Accel cap. Never found out what caused it, never saw it again until now. I just chalked it up to a manufacturing flaw that showed up after vibrating on the engine.

My CSI skills say it happened al at once - hense the clean break all around. Did the engine ever get a lot of fuel in the grank case ? the fumes could hace gotten up there and the touched off by the spark ?

I have seen a few caps break like that but it was usually in a street application and a non-vented cap with spring clips, like a Mopar. In those cases it was fuel vapor making it's way into the dist. from a super rich condition or a non-working PCV. If it was not struck and broken as mentioned, I would check crankcase ventilation. I usually drill several vent holes in all my race caps to prevent this and any ozone build-up.

Had an HEI rotor "explode" and take the cap out. Lucky it was in the garage.

I'd vote for a bad rotor here too!

Sure case of driver abuse..... No doubt about it!!!!
Calvin, you can't make it go faster that way , I already told you I did not think inproving air speed in the cap would help.. LoL.

Inside joke with Calvin and I. Gotta know the owner. Definitely not done intentionally.
