I am just about done installing a new engine in my '68 Lemans. I have attached two photos of a wire that I can't figure out. It does not appear to be listed on my wiring schematic in the service manual. I don't remember where I took it off from. It is not the oil sending wire. It is not one of the generator wires. One photo shows the source of the wire. It comes out where the coil and starter wires come out. The second photos shows the length of this wire. It is approximately long enough to reach the generator. It can reach over to the passenger side of the engine. It is a single female blade receiver. It is black. It might have a single white or double white line on it, but it is very hard to tell. Can anybody tell me where this wire plugs into? Thanks.

If you have an automatic trans, could it be the trans downshift wire?

possibly a/c connection? i have one like that also by the alternater,not hooked up though,like that when i bought the car.

There is no a/c on the car. The temp sensor is a hard square plastic connector. The one in question is a round rubber connector. I could be way off base, but I seem to remember this wire being attached to the cowl. With that being stated, you would think I could find the male blade for this wire, but I can't. This wire is totally separate. The other wires going to the gen and the temp sensor were tape wrapped. There is a metal bendable wire holder on the cowl. I wonder if this wire is held in place by the holder. The only other wire going that direction is the blue one for the oil sending unit.

It looks like the idle stop solenoid connector...but I don't remember having one on my 68.

Picture #1 in above post looks like the type for power connector to the blower motor.

Do you have one on it already?

Blower Motor Wire: The blower moter has a wire attached. The wire in question has the exact same connector as the one on the blower motor. The blower motor wire comes through the cowl on the passenger side and runs over to the blower motor in the engine compartment. The wire in question can't reach as far as the blower motor wire.

Idle Stop: I don't think I have an Idle Stop Soleniod. Where would it be located? I kind of assume it would be on or near the carb.

Fan Suppressor: The wire in question is a foot or more too short to reach the fan motor. The heater core/fan plastic box does encompass enough area to meet this wire; however, there is not a male blade anywhere in site.

On my wiring diagram, it shows a blk. dbl. wht. wire coming out of the fuse block in the engine compartment on the Tempest diagram. The diagram shows this wire running to the edge of the page and stopping. It also shows a Blk. Sgl. Lt Blue wire runnng off the page in the same loction along with a Blk. Dbl Yel. All three of these wires do not show where they go. How weird is that? Any more suggestions? I think the wiring on my Lemans is original, so I am hoping that somebody with original wiring can look where that bunch of wires comes out of the fuse block (shown in one of the first photos), and can find that separate black wire. It is very easy to isolate because all others in that bunch are pretty easy to identify, or they are taped together. Thanks.

sliniod stop is on carb. though you dont need to take of the wire that goes down to the brake line maybe you did take that off. that wire comes directly from fuse panel.

The idle stop solenoid is shown in this photo; it's at the top of the image, the plunger acts on the small tab on the throttle arm.


There should be one on your 68.

you can hook this to a test light and turn on accessorys to see if it comes on to isolate it

I say idle stop solenoid also. I remember it being black with a white stripe from when I went through all my wiring just a few months ago. It should be on the prints. That's how I identified it.

It certainly looks like idle stop sol. connector, less the boot.

Here are some pictures. I can't make out any white stripes on the factory harness but the M&H harness last pic. clearly has two white stripes.

I really appreciate all of your responses. I think we have it narrowed down to the Idle Stop Solenoid wire. As you can see by the photos, I don't have this solenoid. I changed out the intake manifold, and there was not a solenoid on the old manifold or carb. That is probably why I did not have this wire identified like I did with all other wires. Thanks again. Nice looking mill. I don't have a solenoid either. I just folded the wire back and wrapped it in the harness with just a 1/2 or so of it showing so I could find it if I wanted to later. BTW,my wire doesn't even have the connector on it.
