Default 1968 gto water pump

ok guys ive finally made the final steps towards finishing my engine build...

ive rebuilt the original 400 from my 68 gto and ive ran into a hick up.

when i removed the original water pump, i noticed that there was a spacer plate between the water pump and the timing cover, it was rotted of course so i threw it away. this past weekend I purchased an A1-cardone water pump and i noticed it didnt come with the plate... now my question is does the a1- cardone water pump for a 68 gto not need the spacer plate?

ive called summit and jegs, and they have both told me they dont carry the part in stock...

im pretty sure the engine will not cool effectivley without it...

what do you guys think?

It is actually a 2 piece place and our host sells them. If you truly did have a one piece plate, that is 69 or newer pontiac motor and that plate is also available from our host. If you just bought a 68 water pump and your motor is newer, you will need to get a newer water pump.

these are the pics i found of my water pump and plates..

any of you guys have any input? the pump only came with one plate on the inside? does that mean its a 69 timing cover with a 69 water pump?

You have a 1968 water pump, easily identified by the 8 bolt pattern. In 1969 they changed to an 11-bolt design that used only one divider plate (11 holes also) that was sandwiched between the pump and timing cover.

There should be two divider plates that go inside your 1968 timing cover/water pump housing. Without the plates the coolant will not be directed through the engine block properly and it will start overheating right away.
