smokin voltage regulator

Hello, I have a '68 GTO with a 400 and have been working on it for quite some time and just recently I discovered that there was smoke eminating from my voltage regulator. It only smokes when car is running not when key is just in accesory position. Before I purchase a new one what is the cause of this I do not want to cook another one.
