Thumbs up 1973 4 speed GTO

On the Bay.. A board member owns this car. Featured in Hemmings Muscle Machines. I have seen this car several times, and its great example.

I see it's developing the usual bubbles under the vinyl top...mine did the same thing...the factory just did no prep or sealing to the roof on cars getting a vinyl top.

Also, what's up with the nose filler between the nose and the bumper? Looks like it doesn't fit proper in the center.

This factory shows a GTO with a large filler gap. The one on LEADSOLO's car looks about on par.

Another one:

ROUGH is the word for this one. This one would need a solid donor car to bring it back..

Quote:
This is a rare 1973 GTO factory 400 4 Speed with factory console, rally gauges, Sport steering wheel, Rally II rims, and posi. rearend. The drivetrain is complete from carb. to rearend, even has original reverse switch on muncie trans. Motor WP code does run but is not drivable. Alt. is frozen, gas tank is disconnected, and tires are dry rotted. Here is correct VIN# 2F37T3P193XXX. Could not change on ebay. To answer any questions about rust YES everywhere, will need qtrs., hood, fenders, etc., frame is solid. glass is good. PHS documented and is only 1 of 926 made in 1973 with manual trans. and even less with optional muncie 4 speed. More pictures available on request, dial up is tough on uploading. Can deliver in local area.
Last I knew, the reverse switches were always column mounted in '73. He must be mistaking the TCS switch for the reverse switch.

And all that "roughness" is just what is easy to see, imagine what is hidden??? And wow look at that current bid price and he has a reserve, he may want to take the money and run.

He is referring to the reverse lockout mechanism that usually got removed when an aftermarket Hurst shifter was installed. It's mounted of left side frame rail.

Pete, that makes sense. When I bought my GTO, the reverse lockout/ backup lamps were inoperative. All of the parts were present except for the rod that joined the reverse lever on the much superior replacement Hurst shifter to the mechanism on the frame. I modified a F body rod, and it works perfectly, and looks 100 percent factory.

2 years ago I lucked out and bought a brand new in box original ITM shifter for my Grand Am. Must have been in the box for 30 years. Have to pull up on lever to get into reverse. I know Hurst are great shifters, no question about that. However, this ITM shifter has a perfect throw and shifts like slicing through butter. The reason why people removed the reverse lockout when a Hurst was installed was because the factory shifter levers would not fit on the Hurst shifter. The original reverse shift lever was longer and had an extra hole on bottom. The bottom hole is where the reverse rod was mounted. When car was shifted into reverse to back up or to remove the key from the ignition, this reverse rod was moved, causing the swivel to turn, causing the upper rod connected to the steering column to move. Pretty simple design. On a side note, I should be getting my 455 from the rebuilder soon. Can't wait until I drive this Grand Am with the 455.

To a board member? Wonder if I will see it at Carlisle again?

Not a board member, but belongs to POCI.

Lives in CT, so Carlisle might not be in the future, but he plans on going to local and regional POCI meets with the goat.

Anybody notice the 70-72 custom sport wheel in the blue car? Whats up with that? The white car had the later custom sport wheel in it.

And the main reason the reverse back-drive control rod was removed was to install headers!

Most 1973 GTO's have the 1970-72 Custom Sport wheel if optioned that way. It was one of the very few carryovers from the previous generation.

interesting. Why so, if the grand am and gp got the new one? I guess they wanted to delete the old stock of the other wheels? HAHA!

Don't know the reasoning. None of the GP's or GA's received the small hub Sport wheel.
