I imagine some of you have run across this before if you happen to have a 66 Bonneville. Is there any way to reattach the pins or should I just give up and drill some inconspicuous holes thru the molding and into the body? I'd hate to poke holes in these moldings but I'm not sure how else to make this work...

I'm not exactly sure what's supposed to be there, but you mention a pin? Do you still have the part that broke off? What about using one of those welding guns they use to spot weld rods onto car bodies for pulling dents? Do you think something like that might work? I'm just pulling guesses out of the air, but that thought did occur to me. Kevin |

Not familiar with the part, do you have one that still has the original pins?

How about a pic of the pin.......I would think best way is to unfold the metal and replace pin fold that metal back over and maybe some of that 2 part metal epoxy or put a little weld to hold in the pin.
Guess you better check he other trim pcs........ |

Maybe this isn't a common issue. This is a photo of the rear of one of the 8ft long cast rocker moldings for a 66 Bonneville. They are kinda ribbed on the outside, chrome with black in the furrows. There are supposed to be pins (about an inch long - I'll take a picture tonight) that attach to the back of the molding and are inserted into clips in the body to hold the whole thing on.
Originally the pins are inserted into the molding and then, as mrrat1 suggested, the extra metal is folded over the head of the pin to hold them fast. The trouble is that when you take the molding off the car 40 years later, the pins are often yanked out of the molding and the extra metal that once held the pin cracks off and ends up as little pieces in the driveway. This is what happened in the pictured molding. By the way, there are a bunch of pins, perhaps about 6 per side, and most are broken off. |

It's more common than you think. I have fixed this before by epoxying a flat head bolt that is the approximate size as the pin.
I don't think you can bend that potmetal around the bolt. Alternately, you can drill a shallow hole, and threa a length of threaded rod into it using epoxy on the threads to overcome the limited amount of threads available. |

Use silicone adheseve & stick the entire thing on with a couple bead's from a tube in a caulk gun. Work's great once it's dried overnight.

JB Weld some small stainless bolts in place....rough them up with a grinder first to give the epoxy more bite.
