There is one for sale here local, called the guy and he isnt sure exactly what year it is, fishy but maybe he hasnt had it long er something. I think its a 1965
What i have been able to figure out is its a custom cab due to some extra chrome, 3/4 ton due to 8 lugs and full floating axles in the back. It has a coil spring front suspension guess earlier ones were torsion bars Has original 305 V-6 not sure yet of the trans type. I very briefly looked at it it has been rode hard and put away wet but looks to be a desert survivor will probably see about a test drive tomorrow as it is tagged asking 1500 Bud at work says to look at the wrap around windshield up top guess they can rust there often. the back window is a mess maybe had a camper on it once but its plexiglass and wood screwed in wouldnt be to hard to beat it as close to straight as possible then weld the screw holes shut and install original window from LMC That 305 was nothing to brag about something like 200hp and near that in torque, i have a pontiac 350 and turbo 400 that would find a home in there and would boost both torque and HP about 150 eachAnyone here have any love for these trucks and can give me some pointers ? Thanks.. .

My grampa had a '65 GMC half ton with 6-lug wheels, granny-gear 4-speed, and was originally a V-6, but it had a smokey 283 in it. Those old GMC V-6 are pretty scarce, and I would assume it's because they were not known for longevity. Could be the majority of them fell victim to owner neglect, or maybe they were low production from day one. I've only ever seen one or two of those in person, and it's been 20 years since I looked at one. IIRC the exaust ports are on the intake side of the head. It's a really strange set up. I have never really read much feedback about that engine. I'd like to find one in a half ton that was unmolested, and rebuild it to factory spec, just because I love the oddball engines. Torsion bars were used on the 60-61. Check the rear trailing arms for rust at the mounting points. Also the seams where they are welded together. |

A 3/4 ton GMC should be a leaf spring rear chassis.
Cool trucks, Check the normal spots for rust low and where you've mentioned on the roof overhang. The 305's a good engine if you don't overrev it. Hoods are different than a chevy and so are some other small parts. I agree on the above that it'a 65/6 with the windsheild being what it is. The price sounds fair enough.

...plaid valve covers, that is!
Czech this out: http://www.6066gmcguy.org/ Highly recommended. (Keeping the stump puller 305 v6 in there is ALSO recommended...)

Looked a little harder today it has a 2 speed power glide by looking at the colum shifter that was an option.
pushed kinda hard with my thumbs around the winshield suspect areas didnt push through. lifted the hood it has power steering power brakes single master. aftermarket air cleaner but it looks largely unmolested. 6x9 speakers in the doors really something i would want anyways for some sounds Alot of dents and dings but im not looking for a show truck and its a super easy platform to work on with strong aftermarket support looks like a dana rear end maybe a 60 series ? asked the owner if it smokes and or generally runs good he says yes so im going for a test drive sat at 5pms I just want a truck thats cheap to own use it once in a while heck for the price of this its 3-4 months payment and insurance on a newer one.. and i can dick around and make it better use it for a while and not lose any money if i resale.. And its stupid easy to work on dechiphered the vin today its a 1500 127 wheel base made in oakland ca. year 64-66...2492 serial 6001-10,000 GVW VIN 1502HF2492B .engine specs 305E V6 gross hp 165 @ 3800 rpm net hp 142 @ 3800 rpm gross tq 280 @ 1600 rpm net tq 260 @ 1600 rpm 4.25 in. - 3.58 in. 304.7 cu. in. (5.0L) 7.75 to 1 compression I will keep the V-6 for a while out of simplicity but eventually it will go. it pulls stumps because of rear gear which is most likely a 4.56-1

Wrap around windshield is 1960-63. The windshield pictured is 1964-66.
Torsion bar front suspension is 1960-62. Pontiac engine was an option from 1955-59. Don't know about the GMC V6 being rare. They are good engines for a work truck that hauls a load. Gas HOG engine. I probably wouldn't keep it if the truck is just a light duty driver, your Pontiac combo would get better MPG. Likely has a 4.10-ish rear end. Get underneath the truck and look at the cab mounts and the frame in general and as mentioned check out the sheetmetal above the windshield. |

Passenger door is dent, the truck for its age has very little rust its a so ca / desert truck, a back east truck just wouldnt exist unless garage keept and no snow very little rain since 64 how many of those are out there ?, all the rust spots mentioned are minimal,
Listened to it run today its cold blooded after warmed has a miss to it .. it also has a ticking exhaust leak. pulled breather cap while running and nothing came out. Owner claims its never been rebuilt which doesnt matter It has had some trans work done the converter bolt has shine to it and the trans just doent have enough dirt on it not have been out. It has its issues everything is loose no panel is without some sort of dent just like any 1964 truck would have thats never been rebuilt or been tinkered with much it was painted with a paint brush last time It had a camper in the bed once. If i wanted pretty i would have a 2012 GMC truck in my driveway along with a 600 dollar price tag per month for 5 years. No thanks i dont need a truck that bad just once in a while, and again any work this thing would need is stupid easy and at the cost of 2.5 months of a new truck paymet ![]() Easiest thing in the world to change plugs on the plugs are on the inboard / intake manifold side of the head It does indeed have a chevy powerglide under it, got a visual Got some other trucks to look at as well might let this one sit a bit and offer 1000 for it we will see..
