For quite a while now I've resisted the temptation to buy one of these. I drive 25-30,000 miles a year and have always depended on printing out Google directions if I was headed somewhere I wasn't sure of. Lets say that happens 3-4 times a year. My kids run Garmin units in their cars and they find them quite handy.....my guess is that they now depend on them a bit much. That's another thread though.
I'd find one useful when searching for something specific....hotel in downtown Chicago or a decent place to eat at the next exit, maybe even the speed limit....that kind of thing. Woot http://www.woot.com/ has one today that seems like a good deal but reading the reviews makes me wonder. And who do you believe? People that are happy are less likely to go to the trouble of posting a positive review than people that are pissed off, so I question even the reviews. So who makes a good one?

We have three Garmins and I am looking to upgrade to a newer unit. I'll most likely end up at Wally World and get a $100 unit that has lifetime maps. Never did use any of the fancy features.

I have found those helpful in the past purchases of Electronics. They can steer you clear of unnecessary options or models. |

I buy a lot of stuff off of Amazon and briefly looked there. I'll look more closely.

I have a Garmin also, no complaints. The posted speed and current speed are very handy for my one Pontiac with a non-op speedometer and the other Poncho with the speedo that runs fast.
If I were to do it again, I would try a TomTom simply because I would want to try some of the fun voices instead of Garmin's pre-loaded selection.

I have used a droid powered smart phone with the google navigation. It works extremely well, and doesn't cost anything and the upgrades are free and automatic. Because it has all the firepower of Google, it also has street view pictures of the address when you arrive at your destination.

We use garmin ones in two of our cars. I find the larger screen more useful than the one on my phone

I've had a pair of Garmins in the past, but have used my Android phones for the last 3 years.
I did try the WAZE app mentioned above, but it was not very good in the rural areas (it can't even find my house). And PMD's fear of using too much data - navigation doesn't really use all that much data. I do have unlimited data on my Verizon plan (grandfathered in), but I typically use less than 1 GB of data per month (last 6 month average is about 750 MB. I don't download videos or other large data items. I do run both my personal and business email through them, but once again - most attachments that I choose to open are not huge files. |

For my boat, Garmin gets my vote all of the time, everytime. Super reliable, rugged and easy to use.
I have a Mio Knight Rider GPS for driving. http://www.amazon.com/Mio-Knight-4-3.../dp/B001DESTGO It gets lost at times and not as up to date as the one on the Iphone, but having the greetings and turn by turns in the computer voice of Knight Rider is a lot of fun! You can program it to use your name instead of the default Michael greetings. |

I've gone through 3 Garmin units and loved all of them. So, I agree with boater bill.
I've used the gps on my iphone and android phones, but it really kills the battery. |
