Default ORIGINAL KEYS

This is kind of on open question, but I will point to 64-65 for now; Were the original keys that came with our GM cars produced by Briggs&Stratton and have their logo on both keys?
SEEMS LIKE THEY PRODUCED THE LOCK ASSYS. ALSO. bill

Default Good Question

Bill, I recall they said R/P as 65blackplate mentions but the 39,000+ Red 65 showed the Briggs & Stratton keys as in pic below.
Last pic is a pair of R/P keys off the net.

I still have both sets of the original keys (4) for a 65 GTO: Briggs & Stratton Corporation Milwaukee Wis USA
On the other side it has the GM logo and says: your key to greater value. And i still have the knocks outs
60sstuff pics is a little different from mine: on mine The GM logo side has printed in the knock out section the word knock out and the number is on the other side. Backwards from his.

THANKS FOR THE RESPONSE. I SOLD MY CAR IN '95. Spent the next 15 years searching the internet for it and found it 2 1/2 years ago. This time with no original keys. I made sure the replacements I found had the B$S name and logo. Then I started doubting myself so I thought I would check on the forum. THANKS AGAIN bill

x2.

I also have both sets of original keys (knockouts in place, one set is unused) and they are as described here. (On mine the knockout numbers are on the same side as the B&S lettering).

Not likely; not if all the final assembly plants are receiving material from the same supplier.

I still have the keys to the '64 GTO I bought in '73 from original owner and sadly "lost" to a towing co. in '79.

A few are generic copies.

But the one set I believe to be original.

Still has the knockouts in 'em.

The trunk key is more worn than the ignition key.

The numeric code is on the same side with the GM logo. "YOUR KEY TO GREATER VALUE" also on this side.

On the other side, it says "KNOCK OUT" on the knockout.

Under that, it says "MADE" vertically on the left and "IN U.S.A." on right with the "RP" logo in between.

On the left edge it says, "Briggs & Stratton " with "Corporation" beneath that.

On right edge it says, "Milwaukee", might say "Wis" beneath that, too worn to be sure. Whatever it said, the last letter is "S" not "A".

Unless I missed it, this set is unlike any other described here and I think very likely to have been original. Shows the RP and Briggs & Stratton (not the Briggs logo). I bought the car in '73 from the original owner FWIW. One set of copies I know I made after buying the car.

Also have keys for my current '64 GTO.

A few are generic copies.

I thought one pair might have been original.

Finish not nearly as worn as from the set from the long gone car.

Knockouts are missing. And inspecting them just now, I see that I have 2 different keys both cut from an ignition blank, so can't be original. One might have been for a changed lock, possibly the Console? It appears that I only have a generic copy of the trunk key.

The two ignition key blanks are marked identical to the ones 60sstuff posted at #7 except for the A-ABLE stamped on his.

On just one of mine, somebody stamped "ANYTIME" in the area beneath the Briggs logo.

Bill, found this one in Mr. Sestak's listings.

Didn't find any that matched to mine, but the description shed some light on why RP produced some of them. Seems a '40s labor strike prompted GM to arrange RP to produce keys under license from B&S as an alternate source.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-GM-Roche...item51997ad25d

Wonder if there is a way to discover whether RP or B&S made the lockset in your car. Sounds like the key corresponded to the lockset. If you got a RP lockset, you got the RP keys with the locks.

Same keying used so the only way you might know is if RP also put their logo on the original locksets.

Don, any chance you can look at your locksets to see if there is any RP marking on them to match to your key?

Also, does your key match to the ones I described (shows both the RP logo AND the Briggs & Stratton name)? Or does it match one of the other formats pictured here?

John,
picture below of two ignition switches one a 1963 tempest and the other a 65 as can be seen both have the original keys 65 is Rochester 63 is B&S

On one the pin cover has the letters R P stamped the other one has no markings . I couldn't get it to show up in a picture .

I went out and checked a couple of my other cars. the 65 post has the original keys with knock outs still in place and are original to the car they are R P . The 65 Hard top has an original set with knock outs but have only owned this car a short time and I'm not sure if they are original to the car but they are Briggs.not really related to this post but my 64 Rambler has the original keys with knock out still in place and they are Briggs .
