Most will tell you to rechrome the originals.

Depends on the car. If you're going for absolutely perfect show car then have the originals redone by a co. with a good reputation. If you are doing a nice driver then go with the repops and save the money.

Seems like a lot for rechrome or repo's, I had my 64 bumpers done up here in Canada for 825 for show chrome. At the swap meet in Washington u can get rechromed 2nd's not show chrome for 250. Guy said the good ones go for 600 so shop around. It was a chroming shop in California that was doing the cheaper ones.

If yours is straight I'd say rechrome. They don't make them Like they used too. But of course that's me spending your money?

Is it true the high cost of rechromeing is from having to peel off all the old chrome?

I usually dont have anything good to say about repro parts,but.....this is my 65 with repro rear bumper. I have to say the rear bumper is a very nice piece. It weighs a little less than an original but looks and fits very well.

How much lighter is it? had heard the repo's were lighter, was interested in some for my 66 if it's enough of a difference, i have 2 near perfect cores for my car already. but it will cost more to have them done then the repo's.

Never weighed the repro or original but i can feel the repro is a little lighter. It is not flimsy. Would be good for a racecar.

Negotiate a better deal with that price comparison and support the local economy.

Keystone also owns the old North Star Bumper plating shop in Brainerd, MN where they straighten and replate original bumpers. They do excellent work, I've had the bumpers for several cars re-done there. I think you can bring your original bumpers to any Keystone facility (they have offices all over the country) and drop them off.

Repops I have received ALL have the corners of the boxes worn through during shipping exposing the bumpers to any & all shipping wear and tear.

Most local shops have said they are closing down due to pending EPA REGS...or their $$$ have jumped big time...over $600-$900 per bumper...and they are turning away work!!!??? Wow!

Unless you are very picky or building a concours trailer queen i say go with the repro and save yourself some money. You say your car is driver. Do you really want to spend over $1000 for bumpers that will be subjected to the elements daily.

Im surprised no one has mentioned this but repop 65 front bumpers dont have enough point to them to match the front end of the car. They will touch in the middle and have too much space near the fenders, the gaps just look too big. This is probably not a huge issue for a driver but I think it is worth being noted. For the correct fit you cant beat an original

also to note I had zero fitment issues with the rear bumper

I just put a Taiwan repop from PY on my 68 Tempest Custom and was real happy with the fit & finish. For less than $350, they can't be beat.

I have used Tri City Plating out of Tennessee for 3 bumpers. Nice work reasonable pricing. I dropped off a front and rear for my 70 Javelin SST RA car in Carlisle this past fall and will pick them up at the Spring show. About 650 for the pair...
