Hi,

due to an new high power engine my 73 Trans am desperately needs better brakes. What is the best brake update that will fit under stock wheels?

Regards

15x8 Rally II wheels....OK so they are not completely stock but i guess the fitment issues will be the same like with 15x7 originals...

I got a noticeable improvement by changing the rotors to SBC slotted rotors and a set of Hawk ceramic brake pads.

Got power steering?

Go Hydroboost! AND, make sure you have good lap & shoulder belts. You will need them in a panic stop!

Hmmmm, that I can't tell you. I'm too hardheaded to pay $900 for one of those kits, so I bought one for a 83 Chevy 2500 series truck for $100 and two GM hose for $30 a piece and it works so good it is amazing!
Best way I can describe it is "Like throwing out the anchor".

Default Inline Tube

Being that Inline Tube is a top vendor for Ames Performance Engineering, and after some research, I went with Inline Tube all the way. I'm using 15" Rally II's. No fitment issues whatsoever, and each side only took about (1) hour, and the dual master cylinder about (2) hours.

I did a trial fit of the 93-7 F body rear discs on my 15x7 snowflakes.
1/4 inch spacer or 2 minutes with a file on the caliper fins and it was good.

I will follow the rest and say Hydro-boost. I needed that when I had my Pontiac 400 installed in my old 80 Formula. The brakes were horrible due to the lack of vacuum pressure. My present SBC combo gives me plenty of vacuum. However, once I install that 400 in this car( I still have it on an engine stand- will rebuild it ) I will get hydro-boost and love the 80 pickup idea.

Wouldn't some '78 B-body spindles with 12" rotors be pretty much a direct bolt-on upgrade, used with the 1LE aftermarket replacement rotors to get the correct bolt pattern? Maybe not the best but certainly much more affordable than aftermarket 12" brakes and a sure fit with 15" plain steel and Rally II wheels since the B-body cars were factory equipped this way.

Do the later B-body spindles directly interchange with the 2nd-gen F-body spindles? I know that either one can be used as a tall spindle conversion on '64 -'72 A-body cars because I've used them both on one of my '64 A-body cars. I would imagine the B-body spindles would be an easy swap onto a 2nd-gen F-body.

1LE upgrade.....I have this on my 71. I bought the spindles new from GM (they have the ABS sensor set up i nthem so obviously late model stuff works). I'm told GM has discontinued these spindles as a new part. I used Wilwood GMIII alloy calipers that use the D52 pads as per the stock caliper.....I had to file a little off the caliper and run 3mm spacers to clear the rally 15x7 wheels, so obviously the GMIII is not exactly the same dimentio nas a stock caliper, which will fit without clearance issues.
