Default Side Mirrors

Hey guys....I was just wondering if the bullet/sport type side mirrors on 2nd gen cars are in the same location on both sides of the car.

Or is the passenger side mirror further back?

Also...does the passenger side mirror glass adjust or is it fixed? My mirror is either really stiff or doesnt move.

My passenger side is about 2" further back. I never noticed till you brought it up. Mine is adjustable.

Thanks for taking the time to check it out Danpaul. Is it factory punched or drilled?

I suppose my mirror is adjustable but just really stiff so it doesnt move everytime I take a bump in the road...which is good. I know the earlier mirrors tend to move around on their own a lot.

I never noticed on mine, can't believe a 2" difference.

And, yes, the mirror glass is movable.

wow....I know on the 1st gen birds there's a 2" - 2.5" difference. I thought maybe that changed for 2nd gen..since they have more advanced side mirrors.

I've got a '69 bird and I bought 2nd gen bullet mirrors for it....every natural instinct says put them in the same place....but no point if I can't see out the mirror lol

Good to know its not noticeable though.

I just measured the distance from the front edge of the door to the front tip of the mirror and both the DS/PS mirrors are right at 9" on my two 75 TA's.

I got my dad to help me mock up the passenger mirror and it looks like it'll work just fine in the same position as the driver mirror. The holes on my passenger door were actually 1" forward, but it looks like someone tried to match the DS but wasn't very accurate. Needless to say I'm gonna move the mirror to match the DS.

btw....the idea behind the 2" difference is this: modern cars have the mirrors in the same place, but the angle of the mirror casing is different. Now with older cars, the mirrors are identical but opposite, so to get the same effect..one mirror needs to be further back. What I don't get is why can't the driver mirror be moved back to match the passenger mirror? I'm sure it'll work just as good.

I wonder at what point did they start fitting the ps mirror at the factory. I know for 1st gen birds the ps mirror was dealer installed, usually around 5.5" from the edge, compared to 3" on the driver side.

Thanks for all the help guys
