Default 1963 Lemans Cage

I figured I was far enough along to post up some pics of my cage going in my 63. I have to finish weld everything this weekend and then start on the tunnel and floor. This is the first time installing a cage in a car for me and it's quite the "learning" experience. I kept the rear frame rails, basically went from the ladder bar x-member forward. Someday I might backhalf it, but I already have a big tire car. I want to stay with a 9" or 10" rear tire for this car. I bought a pre-bent 14 pt. cage from http://autoweldchassis.com/index2.ivnu and it fit pretty damn good. Paid an extra $20 to have them fishmouth most of the tubes and it made things alot easier.

I'll post more pics as I move along. Hopefully I'll have the floor done in the next few weeks.

Is that mild steel or chrome moly?
One thing about the 63's is they
will except a big tire without
any mods to the whell wells.
R70 Judge put a 12:50 tire in his.
It's tight but it looks Bad Ass.
Keep it up, looking great.

Transporter, the fitment of the main hoop is spot on. You can basically fit your finger around the bend between the bar, the roof, and the pillar. The main hoop is shipped long, so you have to cut about 3 inches off each end depending on how tight you want it to fit. See photo below, just dont make fun of my welds, its my first time with a tig. Awesome work on your project, im following your build also.

GaryK, yes you are right. I bought the car late last winter from Jim Wade.

Blueghoast, I got it in mild steel. You can upgrade it though in chrome moly and if I remember correctly, it wasnt crazy money. I'll have to look up R70's build and see how that tire fits. A 12.50 would be perfect. Thanks for the compliments, i'm just trying to keep up with you guys, LOL.

Thanks same on yours, but am starting to think that soon the drag strips and streets of America will be over run with early Tempests, lol

Main reason I asked about the cage was IF I decide to do one, I was thinking of putting it "into" the dash and trying to hid the uprights right next to the A pillar and the main hoop right at the B.

Do they give you enough tube to move the A pillar bar forward 6 to 8 inches?

Thanks Stan

Stan,
No, there isn't enough on the A-pillar bars to move them that far forward. The door bars would be too short also. They do fit tight to the dash and the pillar, and there is ample room to move your legs/head around them. Im putting in a swing out bar, so that should make it easier too.

Yeah, real reason I want to put the bars into the dash is because I want to bring front strut braces back off the front frame horns into the firewall and tie into the A pillar bars.

I would like ALL of that to be behind the dash and out of site, besides I still don't know, but I might want to mount hanging pedals with reservoir off the under dash cross tube so that the firewall is "clean".

Thanks for the input.

Stan

28x12.5 M/T ET Street on a 15x8" M/T ET Drag wheel. I think they are 3 1/2" offset. Not that it matters since you can use whatever offset you want depending on the width of the rear. I think my rear is around 57" face to face (at the wheel mounting point if that makes sense)

It's tight, but it does fit. I haven't "adjusted" the stock wheel wells at all. A few whacks with a big F hammer would easily free up some more breathing room.

Cage is looking great

Just a recommendation. The Chris Alston Chassisworks swing outs are very nice. I have them on both sides in my car.

Thanks for the heads up, I just measured up my axle (56 1/2") axle face to axle face, so I should be in good shape. 28x12.5 ET Street section width is about the same as the Goodyear 28x10 slick I was hoping to run.

Might have to pick those up. They look nice and clean.

I think I had asked you last yr. about your front motor plate and how it fit. I know you responded, but I cant find the post. You used the AP plate if my memory is right, but which one? I see they have 3 different ones. If you have any pics of the plate fitment could you post them if you get a chance?

Thanks a ton.

This was my same thought process when I picked my tire. Tom S. had me up to his place to check out his '63 Le Mans and he told me that he gets a 28x10 slick under his without issue. I checked all the different section widths and picked the biggest street legal tire I could get

Might have to pick those up. They look nice and clean.

They are pretty much all my chassis guy uses now. They are a very nice piece. A little more expensive than the rest, but worth it for the quality.
