I need to replace a piece of HVAC return air duct. It's just a simple box and the HD and Lowes stuff is thin junk. Recommendations? Been waiting on a friend to get this for me, but that's just been a waste of time.

Have never had to replace a return. Have rebuilt several supply boxes in the slab. Might try this manufacturer, most likely, they may supply heat & a/c contractors in your area

Greymetalsouth might be product in your area too.
Try a local HVAC supplier parking lot. It takes a good guy just a few to bend it right up if you have the measurements and male & female ends determined. Most of them I know are fun to hang out with on Friday afternoons. My neighbor has a massive break that I use to make sheetmetal projects with. I have to get it done before the jug comes out though or I forget what I went over there for.

The location is at floor level right in a higher traffic path where durability is important. Kicking and hand-trucking past is an absolute.

Put some bead board on it with molding around it. Plexi over it if necessary.
